Young children's early experiences with literacy learning are critically important to their later success in school. How can preschool and primary teachers make sure that those experiences are as positive as they can be particularly in today's complex world, where expectations for children and teachers have increased and where technology is changing the nature of what we think of as literacy?

This collection includes 14 articles, published originally in IRA's influential journal The Reading Teacher, that highlight what outstanding early literacy instruction looks like in preschool and early elementary classrooms. Covering instructional strategies, assessment, and home school connections, the evidence-based approaches described here will inspire improved teaching practice that can lead to increased learning among young children of all backgrounds.

Distinguished educator Dorothy Strickland introduces the collection with a discussion of the challenges facing teachers today, a summary of trends and research in early literacy, and suggestions for how these articles can be used in professional development settings. Included with each article are reflection questions to spark discussion in school-based professional learning communities or teacher education classrooms.

Mindfully in Christ
By Randal56
As a practitioner and teacher of Mindfulness I have waited years for such a text as this one to come along. With skillful means Mr. Johnston's clear articulated scholarship reveals to the Christian the Biblical imperative that believers benifit greatly in the practice of mindfulness. His practical application of scripture empowers the practitioner to be solidly grounded while finding a great compassionate grace to change their life and the life of those they are called to love. Written for new Christian and well seasoned followers this text is foundational in being Mindfully in Christ

By Seany68
I really enjoyed this book and it left me wanting more information about mindfulness. I had heard about it through secular psychology classes and groups that I was in, so I had to explore it and see if it was congruent to Christianity and our practices. I would definitely recommend this book. It is a way to wet the appetite.

good intro to mindfulness for a Christian
By Charles Stone-author of Brain Savvy Leaders: the Science of Significant Ministry
Mindfulness is quite the rage today. Often taught in the context of Buddhism, this book is a refreshing look at how mindfulness clearly squares with a Biblical worldview. I recommend it highly.

The Power And The Passion, by Adam Houge

In the early church the believers’ lives were filled with the Spirit and power of God. They were not just friends but a closely bonded family, forming their own culture separate from the unbelievers who surrounded them. They made it their living passion to follow the Lord according to truth having only one doctrine. With their hearts on fire miracles, power, and demonstrations of the Holy Spirit were normal for everyday life. These things were done “that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.” 1 cor 2:5 But somewhere through time things have changed. We act more as friends than family and truth has many versions. We hardly see the power and miracles the early church saw, only hearing stories of isolated events. But power doesn’t come unless the passion comes first. In this book you will learn how to experience daily, the living power of God and the passion of Jesus Christ in your life. You will learn how to bring back the early church, that it may be alive and real again today.

Growth producing revelation
By Valerie Caraotta
The book The Power and the Passion will highlight then true meaning of being a disciple of God. It is a critical book for Christians of all ages, teen through adulthood, regardless of maturity level. There have been many that have been saved for a long time and are resting in complacency. Author Adam Houge will help set a revival fire in your heart to understand our need to draw closer to Him. If there is anyone you know that has lost their first love this resource will kindle the fire anew.

As he teaches you to admonish the Scriptures you will learn the truths about Calvinism and how the Holy Spirit desires to be The Great Teacher in your life. Throughout the book there are fitting Scriptures that will prove false teachers exist and admonish us to show love and mercy with the possessions entrusted to us. Beware of the snares that beset us as Houge teaches about false prophets and not following God's will for your life. We are to examine our lives daily, he states, to ensure our love walk while speaking the truth in love despite persecution.

The Lord has shown this author many things including allowing him to survive near death experiences. As he shares his heart with you, it will be as if the Lord is discipleing you, for in fact his revelation comes from the very throne room of God. You will grow in greater maturity with this resource and make an impact with those around you. I recommend this book for the timely truths in the days we are living in.

Spiritual Life 101
By Pappa Place
Okay first the complaints. This book needs a good editing job bad. There are division signs in random places all over this book and it is very distracting. Then there are three fonts used in this manuscript and they switch from one to the other with no rhyme or reason. This is also very distracting. There also several misspelled words in the text.
Okay saying all that the content and message of this book is stellar. This is a very spiritual book it tells how to walk in God's spirit and way. It also tells you the pitfalls to avoid. I would recommend this book to anyone who is religious or spiritually minded. I enjoyed reading this book and I intend to read more of his books.
So 5 stars for content 3 stars for editing.

A SERIOUS GROWTH TOOL FOR THE SERIOUS CHRISTIAN!
By gabe
This is a Serious growth tool for the serious Christian! I found it to be helpful in my own walk and would recommend it for yours. The author starts out talking about how various christian practices don't actually honor god. Then he calls us to be founded on the scriptures and have regard for truth because. Jesus is truth. I find myself agreeing with this seeing that he uses literally over 300 verses to prove his stand point. He calls u to be founded in the word then does exactly that by leading u to it. This is not a book full of fluff, but has a lot of meat to it.

If you want to grow in your walk then pick this one up!

PREFACE

As reflections of society, our nation's schools have historically been challenged to respond to various societal changes and mandates. In 1954 the Supreme Court, in its decision in the case of Brown v. Board of Education, mandated that schools stop segregating students based on race. With passage of the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 (PL 94-142), now called the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Congress required our nation's educational system to include students with disabilities. Within the last 20 years, demographic shifts, economic conditions, and changes in the structure of families have challenged schools to meet the needs of a diverse group of students.

The inclusion movement has developed to meet these educational mandates and challenges. However, there is still a considerable gap between theory and practice. This book is intended to fill that gap by keeping the perspectives of teachers, students, and families in mind, and translating current research on inclusion into effective and reflective classroom practices that address and expand the realities of the classroom setting. Within each chapter are numerous classroom-based examples and case studies of real situations that educators, students, and family members encounter in inclusive classrooms as well as guidelines, strategies, and procedures that have been used to address these situations to educate all students successfully in inclusive classrooms.

The book is designed to serve as a text for undergraduate, graduate, and in-service courses for teachers, ancillary support personnel, and administrators interested in teaching and providing services to students with diverse learning needs. Because of its focus on instructional procedures and collaboration, the book also can serve as a supplementary text for a course on methods or consultation.

ORGANIZATION AND APPROACH

The book is organized into four parts. Part One includes Chapters 1, 2, and 3 and introduces you to the foundations and fundamentals of inclusion and the challenges of its implementation. Part Two includes Chapters 4, 5, 6, and 7 and provides you with strategies for creating an inclusive environment that supports learning for all students. Part Three includes Chapters 8, 9, 10, and 11 and offers you strategies to differentiate instruction to promote the learning of all students within inclusive educational settings. Part Four consists of Chapter 12 which offers a framework and specific strategies and resources for evaluating inclusion programs in terms of individual and programmatic progress.

A Principled Philosophy

The following principles of effective inclusion also provide a framework for this book. These four principles—diversity, individual needs, reflective practice, and collaboration—are integrated into each chapter of the book and demonstrate that inclusion is not just a government mandate but a principled philosophy of reflective, effective teaching.

  • Principle #l: Effective inclusion improves the educational system for all students by placing them together in general education classrooms—regardless of their learning ability, race, linguistic ability, economic status, gender, learning style, ethnicity, cultural background, religion, family structure, and sexual orientation. Inherent in the concept of inclusion is the recognition of the need to individualize the educational system for all students. The result can be an educational system that is more able to accommodate and respond to the individual needs of all students. Thus, changes in the educational system designed to facilitate effective inclusion also benefit all students, teachers, families, ancillary support personnel, and administrators.
  • Principle #2: Effective inclusion involves sensitivity to and acceptance of individual needs and differences. Educators cannot teach students without looking at the various factors that have shaped and will continue to shape their students and make them unique. Therefore, since race, linguistic ability, gender, economic status, and learning ability interact to create a complex amalgam that affects academic performance and socialization, educators, students, and family members must be sensitive to and accepting of individual needs and differences. Educators also must be willing to modify attitudes, instructional techniques, curriculum, and models of family involvement to address and accommodate these needs. Our ability to redefine the mainstream to include the unique needs and differences of students and their families, as well as incorporate their varied visions, voices, and contributions, is critical in expanding the educational, social, and cultural base of our educational system and promoting effective inclusion programs.
  • Principle # 3: Effective inclusion requires reflective educators to modify their attitudes, teaching and classroom management practices, and curricula to accommodate individual needs. Success at creating inclusive classrooms depends on the ability of educators to become effective and reflective practitioners who are able to think critically about their values, beliefs, and practices. They continually engage in self-improvement by reflecting upon and evaluating the impact of their actions on students, families, and other professionals and refining their teaching practices and curricula to facilitate the learning of all students. Therefore, in addition to providing you with effective practices and examples of their use in inclusive settings, the book contains several innovative pedagogical features designed to help you develop your skill as a reflective practitioner.
  • Principle # 4.: Effective inclusion is a group effort which involves collaboration among educators, other professionals, students, families, and community agencies. When these groups work together, the likelihood for effective inclusion is increased. Thus, the book outlines the roles and responsibilities of educators, families, students with disabilities and their peers, and community agencies to promote effective inclusion programs, and offers strategies for integrating these roles so that individuals work collaboratively and communicate regularly.

These four principles, along with the incorporation of instructional technology into each chapter, make the book consistent with professional standards for preparing teachers to work in today's diverse classrooms.

A Non-Categorical Approach

The book is also organized to the serve as a model for creating inclusive classrooms for all students. It is meant to facilitate your development of a holistic approach to educating students while focusing on individual needs rather than on global disability characteristics. Thus, it is not separated into chapters by disability category or cultural and linguistic background that imply and focus on the differences that have been used to segregate students from one another. Rather, the book approaches inclusion as an ongoing, dynamic process for all students. Chapter titles and content relate to and address the key factors that contribute to effective and reflective practices for educating all students in inclusive settings. Instead of separate chapters on students with various disabilities or students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, information and classroom-based examples related to these students as well as other students are integrated and embedded in each chapter. It is also important to note that strategies appropriate for one group of students also can be used with other groups of students.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This book is a result of the collaborative efforts of my students, colleagues, friends, and relatives. The book is an outgrowth of many ideas I learned from students at Woodlawn Junior High School (Buffalo, New York) and Public School 76 (Bronx, New York), colleagues from PS 76-George Bonnici, Nydia Figueroa-Torres, Jean Gee, and Jean Barber-and colleagues at the University of Kentucky, and the State University of New York at New Paltz. Much of the information in this book was learned through interactions with teachers, administrators, and students in the Easton (Pennsylvania) Area School District and the New Paltz (New York) School District, who both welcomed me and shared their experiences. Many of the examples and vignettes are based on the experiences of my students at the State University of New York at New Paltz. I truly value my colleagues and students, who continue to educate me and add to my appreciation of the remarkable dedication and skill of teachers.

I also want to acknowledge my students, colleagues, and friends who provided support and guidance throughout all stages of the book. I especially want to recognize Lee Bell, John Boyd, Meenakshi Gajria, Judy Dorney Luis Garrido, Charleen Gottschalk, Margaret Gutierrez, Karen Giek, Mark Metzger, Bob Michael, Jean Mumper, Helen Musumeci, Kathy Pike, Sarah Ryan, Robin Smith, Lorraine Taylor, Margaret Wade-Lewis, Halee Vang, and Catharine Whittaker for supporting and inspiring me throughout the process. My deepest appreciation also goes to Laurel Garrick Duhaney for preparing the innovative instructor's manual that accompanies this book and to Connie D'Alessandro for her invaluable assistance in coordinating various aspects of the book.

This book would not have been possible without the efforts and skills of Gianna Marsella, who provided me with the professional and emotional support needed to enhance many aspects of the book. Her subtle and at times direct prodding helped me to create a more readable, practically-oriented, and pedagogically sound book. I also appreciate the work of Ann Davis, Pat Grogg, Helen Greenberg, and Sheryl Langner. I also am grateful to the following reviewers: Marie Brand, New York University; Frederick J. Bartelheim, University of Northern Colorado; Jim Burns, The College of St. Rose (NY); Moon K. Chang, Alabama State University; Younghee M. Kim, Oregon State University; Rori R. Carson, Eastern Illinois University; Robert J. Evans, Marshall University; Robert W Ortiz, New Mexico State University; Colleen Shea Stump, San Francisco State University; and Qaisar Sultana, Eastern Kentucky University. Their thoughtful and professional comments helped to shape and improve the book.

I want to dedicate this book to Suzanne Salend, my collaborator in life, Jack Salend, my son, and Madison Salend, my granddaughter, in recognition of their love, spirit, intelligence, encouragement, strength, and passion. They have taught me how to accept and grow from a challenge. I hope that this book will help you accept and grow from the challenge of creating inclusive classrooms for all students.

Some parts get a little boring - chapters are long. However, the chapters on disabilities are great reads for descriptions and strategies. CD Rom is especially helpful as a resource and example.

There has to be better
By Brian Hendricks
I know anyone who is going to purchase this book is doing so because they are taking a class relevant to the material covered in "Creating Inclusive Classrooms", but I still feel I must warn anyone who is taking a class (even someone such as myself who was excited to do so!) this book is boring, drags on far too long on many topics, and the method of citation is entirely too distracting to make for a smooth read.

Be prepared to labor through many of the chapters in this book. Even chapters that cover interesting material feels as it will drone on forever. The writers and editors have little desire to make this information interesting for the college student reader.

Another word of warning: If you are taking a class that uses this book and will be teaching at the secondary level, you will find many of their real-life examples woefully inadequate, as they focus on the primary level.

This book has good information, if you can manage to stay awake long enough to find it.

Good Book- provides several pieces to the Puzzle of Henry Halleck
By Alex
I came across this book in trying to find a good read on Halleck. Ambrose's book was written in the mid 1960s; This book was written in 1999, Marszalek's book came out in 2004. The author of this book, Anders, is a west point grad. The book is about 700 pages of text. This book offers several strong points, features and perspectives. Anders's text is comprised of numerous letters and telegrams written and received by Halleck, as well as many other officers and politicians. Many of these letters are not utilized in other works, and it is refreshing as well as fascinating to read them. Ander's also departs from the customary approach by many historians in their treatment of Lincoln, in which they refuse to treat Lincoln as anything other than a genius in all his endeavors, and as someone who was smarter militarily than his generals. (This method is consistently found in the works of authors whose sense of political correctness rather than historical accuracy guides their pen, such as Doris Goodwin and James McPhereson) These writers usually rely upon the second hand account of one of Lincoln's clerk stating that, after being the general in chief for several months, Lincoln was so dissatisfied with Halleck , that he thought nothing more of him than a "first rate clerk." Anders clearly shows that Halleck was anything but a first rate clerk, and subsequent historians to treat him thus were really just taking the lazy approach to addressing one of the most fascinating generals of the civil war.

In this book, Anders is highly critical of Lincoln's military handling of the war, especially in the summer and fall of 1862. Ander's rightly points out Lincoln's bungling of the Virginia theater during Stonewall's campaign through Antietam.

A stated above, the author is a grad of west point. Unfortunately his view point is very limited and shallow in analyzing the totality of the war and political arena at that time. For example, Anders hammers Lincoln for appointing so many political generals early in the war, and attributing the length of the war to this decision. While they may be true tactically, Ander's does not bother to discuss or analyze why Lincoln made those appoints, or discuss the political realities of the time, the interplay between the regular army, the volunteer army and state governors. Too often Anders forgets that the civil war, first and foremost is a political war, and that the time period was one were the general consensus was that the regular army officers consisted of many West point grads who had betrayed their country by joining the rebels, that the militia was the true success of the american fighting man, and that Lincoln needed volunteers as well as bi-partisan support to fight the war. (Thereby, the appointing political Generals, like Banks and Butler, who could raise troops, etc. See Work's "Lincoln's Political Generals")

Anders openly acknowledges his intention of rehabbing the image of Halleck, and he is right to do so, as Halleck has become the whipping boy of almost every historian, save for Ambrose. This is due to Grant and Sherman's dislike of Halleck, However, Anders comes across as over zealous in his defense of Halleck, and either glosses over, or simply ignores certain elements of Halleck's actions which undermine the would be image that Ander's seeks to create. A good example of this can be found in Ander's discussion of why Halleck selected Grant as the second in command of the combined armies for the Corinth siege. Anders states that Halleck showed his confidence in Grant by selecting him to that post, for if Halleck was killed, Grant would be in command. However, Grant's memoirs do not even support this. Grant, Sherman, Pope (anyone who was involved in that campaign) knew that Halleck put Grant in second in command because Halleck had NO confidence in Grant. There are numerous other examples, the other being the pontoon train at Fredericksburg. Anders revisits many of the notions of HAlleck which have been set in stone in the civil war story. This includes some interesting perspectives on HAlleck's relationship with McClellan

However, with that said, I think this book is a must have for the serious civil war student. However, they should also get the Marszalek book on Halleck as well. the two books together really give a great treatment on Halleck. To further understand Halleck, the book on Buell, "Most promising of all" is a great source as well.

Some Books are Easier to Write than to Review
By The author, Curt Anders
When I sent copies of this book to members of my family and some friends, their reactions were all the same: "It sure is big!" That's true. Henry Halleck's War is more than 700 pages long; it uses roughly 250,000 words; its 20 chapters contain close to 1,800 source citations -- what we used to call footnotes; and it weighs three pounds, six and a half ounces. Why is it so big? A great many pages are devoted to messages, letters, and reports General Halleck wrote during the war. They show that his contributions to the Union's successful war effort were both numerous and valuable -- and that critics such as Gideon Welles were wrong. It was Welles who said, "Halleck originates nothing, anticipates nothing, takes no responsibility, plans nothing, suggests nothing, is good for nothing." Hardly anyone ever said anything good about Halleck during his lifetime. His friend Cump Sherman urged him to defend himself, to fight back. General Halleck refused. He was willing to be judged by what was in the records. In them, he told Cump, some future historian would find the truth about him and what he did. But during the past hundred years, too few scholars have bothered to go through the 128 thick volumes of the Official Records, flip through crumbling pages until they found the documents that involved General Halleck, and study them. As a result, just about everyone has agreed with Welles that Henry Halleck was a disaster. However, recently Guild Press of Indiana put the entire wall of books called the Official Records on a single wafer-thin CD-ROM. That made it possible for me to do what General Halleck trusted someone would do -- study his record. But I've gone beyond that. The messages, letters, and reports included in this book enable readers to judge Halleck for themselves -- which, I think, is what he hoped would happen. In the course of selecting all these materials and providing enough narrative to place them in historical context, several things surprised me. First, the requirements of the job of general-in-chief were very different from what Halleck's critics assumed. No one knew what a general-in-chief was supposed to do. No valid precedent or standards for judging his performance existed. Even so, ignorance didn't stop anyone from declaring General-in-Chief Halleck a failure. Second, his relationship to Abraham Lincoln had a special aspect that has been completely overlooked. Both men were lawyers: Lincoln in central Illinois, Old Brains out in San Francisco -- indeed, he was the respected senior partner of California's leading law firm. Accordingly, Halleck's performance ought to be judged as that of a special counsel retained to help Lincoln prosecute Union versus Confederacy -- a case that was being tried on battlefields from eastern Virginia to New Mexico. In everything General Halleck wrote you will find precision of thought and expression reflecting his expertise both in military art and in the ability to reduce complex questions to basic principles -- and then to apply them. These were skills that Lincoln needed desperately. Some observers have hailed him as a military genius -- but if you read closely some of the documents he signed, you will see how dependent he actually was on special counsel Halleck. Third, this book also contains messages and letters to Halleck from Don Carlos Buell, George McClellan, William Rosecrans, Cump Sherman, Ulysses Grant, and many other generals. I was surprised by how much they revealed about themselves in what they wrote Halleck. I had never known enough about General Buell, for example, to have an opinion about him. But from the messages he sent Old Brains, I learned why he was such a disappointment. Same regarding McClellan -- the "Young Napoleon." If you doubt that he was a spoiled brat, just read his messages to his wife and to General Halleck. My fourth surprise was that I could compress the quarter of a million words in this book into a single simple sentence: General Halleck didn't win the war, but clearly he kept Abraham Lincoln from losing it. Lincoln was completely unprepared to be Commander- in-Chief, and initially he made some dreadful mistakes. That stopped in mid-1862 when he sent a peremptory order to Halleck to come to Washington. Halleck saved the Union capital by moving McClellan's Army of the Potomac northward to help John Pope. He saved Grant when Lincoln secretly gave command of the Vicksburg operation to a political general already notorious for incompetence. But Halleck couldn't always save Lincoln from blundering. Behind Halleck's back, Lincoln gave command of the Army of the Potomac to "Fighting Joe" Hooker -- with General Lee's brilliant victory at Chancellorsville as a humiliating result. Ordinarily, however, Old Brains and the President reached a meeting of the minds. Both men, being lawyers, placed great weight on principles. Halleck was driven by a high sense of duty and of honor and of love of country. But he was also an expert on the principles of military art, and he enforced them. He told Lincoln and later Grant, You cannot, you dare not try to control a battle from a desk hundreds or thousands of miles from the killing site. "I hold," Old Brains declared, "that a general in command of an army in the field is the best judge of existing conditions."
That was the Halleck Doctrine. It was turned on its head recently during military operations in the Balkans directed from the White House. Reputations, Professor Walter McDougall has written, are the only things over which historians have control. Historians destroyed Henry Halleck's reputation. It's time to give some of his good name back to him.

The Market Gardener: A Successful Grower's Handbook for Small-scale Organic Farming, by Jean-Martin Fortier

Les Jardins de la Grelinette is a micro-farm located in eastern Quebec, just north of the American border. Growing on just 1.5 acres, owners Jean-Martin and Maude-Helène feed more than two hundred families through their thriving CSA and seasonal market stands and supply their signature mesclun salad mix to dozens of local establishments. The secret of their success is the low-tech, high-yield production methods they’ve developed by focusing on growing better rather than growing bigger, making their operation more lucrative and viable in the process.

The Market Gardener is a compendium of la Grelinette’s proven horticultural techniques and innovative growing methods. This complete guide is packed with practical information on:

  • Setting-up a micro-farm by designing biologically intensive cropping systems, all with negligible capital outlay
  • Farming without a tractor and minimizing fossil fuel inputs through the use of the best hand tools, appropriate machinery, and minimum tillage practices
  • Growing mixed vegetables systematically with attention to weed and pest management, crop yields, harvest periods, and pricing approaches

Inspired by the French intensive tradition of maraichage and by iconic American vegetable grower Eliot Coleman, author and farmer Jean-Martin shows by example how to start a market garden and make it both very productive and profitable. Making a living wage farming without big capital outlay or acreages may be closer than you think.

Jean-Martin Fortier is a passionate advocate of strong local food systems and founder of Les Jardins de la Grelinette, an internationally recognized model for successful biointensive micro-farming.

Review
"Jean-Martin’s book is very well done and should be of great use to market growers everywhere. Exchange of ideas and information is so important because when we pass ideas on, the next person gets to start where we got to and take the ideas to another level."—Eliot Coleman, organic farming pioneer and author of the Winter Harvest Handbook

"I've read this book in French and all I can say is that, if you want to engage yourself in the market gardening, The Market Gardener is far more than a simple manual, it's the story of a life and a major giveaway of knowledge without the shadow of a secret. A must have, nothing else."—Michel Michiels, Arlon / Belgium

"We are so excited that Le Jardinier-Maraîcher is finally translated in English! This book was an inspiration for many of our French members (we are a farmers' co-op) and now we can recommend it to all .... especially to the new generation interested in small scale farming...Thank you!"—Nicole Briand Communications, La Récolte de Chez Nous / Really Local Harvest

"In his revolutionary book, JMF brings about a change of paradigm that couldn't come any sooner. New gardeners will find in this book a step-by-step recipe that almost guarantees success, while the more seasoned ones can use it as a steppingstone for future achievements. Ever since its release in Quebec, it has reached thousands of readers and caused a ripple of benefits: people of all ages, especially the young, can now aspire to buy or rent their own land and live a fulfilling—and profitable—life in the countryside, which a few years back was still a wild dream for most of us. Aside from being very technically dense, it offers viable solutions to social problems such as land access, unemployment in regions, and the unsustainable nature of modern agricultural practices. It has literally been training an entire army of Davids that is now starting to address the bulk of these problems, or Goliath. And it's happening all across the province! Most importantly, this book deeply inspired me and gave me hope for the future without having to consult an eco-therapist."—Alexandre J-Nicole, Biologist, graphic designer and illustrator

"Jean-Martin Fortier extols the virtues of being small-scale, and expertly details the use of such scale-appropriate tools as broadforks, seeders, hoes, flame weeders, low tunnels, high tunnels, and many other unique tools, specifically designed for this brand of farming. He picks up right where Eliot Coleman has left us, applying many of his core principles, but doing it in such a brilliant way as to provide beginning farmers a solid framework of the information they need to start up and become successful small-scale organic growers themselves.—Adam Lemieux, Product Manager of Tools & Supplies, Johnny's Selected Seeds

Incredible, practical advice
By lelaba
I stumbled across The Market Gardener while searching for ways to (organically) maximize the yield I could get from my tiny back yard vegetable garden. Even though I knew the book was geared toward someone planning to sell their produce as opposed to a home gardener like myself, I decided to buy the book based on reviews and what I saw in the book via Amazon’s “Look Inside” feature. (I bought it from a different store only because I had a gift card that needed to be used.) This book does not disappoint.

Keep in mind- this isn’t a guide on how to do permaculture or sustainable agriculture. It’s about maximizing revenue and profit on an organic micro-farm. So he may not provide information on everything you would expect from an organic grower. For example, I was surprised to read that they buy their compost instead of making it themselves, the way every other organic/sustainable gardener seems to do (or at least claim they do). The impression I get from other books and articles is that you can totally sustain your garden forever and ever off the compost you make yourself, and that may be true, but Jean-Martin states that the time and space they would need to create and maintain compost piles is better utilized by growing more produce- plus the organic compost they buy is predictable in terms of quality and composition, which are both important. It made sense to me when I read it. However, he never suggests that it cannot or should not be done on your own- just that it makes more sense for their farm, all things considered, to buy compost instead of make it.

Jean-Martin’s writing style is also refreshing compared to many organic growers. Too often they come across as if their way is the only right way, no matter the circumstances, but I found no such attitude in The Market Gardener. Jean-Martin discusses the various topics in a matter-of-fact way, explaining not only how they do things on their farm but why. He will explain various things they have tried, why they may or may not have worked on the farm, and give the pros and cons to each method, including the method they use, and the impression I was left with was “Here is what works best for us and why. Your situation may be different, so I will give you all the information I have and the reasoning I use, and trust you to choose what you think will work best for your situation.”

The practical advice throughout the book is stellar. There are no photographs, but honestly the book doesn’t need them. The Market Gardener is about substance, not fluff. The pages are packed with useful charts, tables, and relevant drawings. Whether they’re about crop rotation, crop planning, planting, insect management, financial aspects or anything else, the tables and charts are easy to read, practical, useful, AND (for me, anyway), easily adaptable. I spent a lot of time before I bought the book building spreadsheets that would provide me with a good “at a glance” for things I wanted to know, so I was happy to see information presented in a similar fashion.

This book contains, hands down, THE MOST useful information on crop rotation (and how to implement it) than any other resource I have found to date. Before buying this book I had spent literally weeks on the web, trying to figure out the best way (or at least a practical way) to implement crop rotation and not finding anything beyond very generalized advice to “rotate by crop families” or “follow heavy feeders with light feeders” or “don’t plant the same things in the same beds every year”. Trying to find out if plants needed a two, three, four, or more year rotation was difficult and there was a lot of conflicting information on what plants were heavy vs. light feeders (or in between), how long rotations should be, and so on. I also couldn’t find any information on how far move plants for the next season in order to avoid diseases that may be present in the soil. One foot? Five? Ten? A whole field? I never could find that info. This book presented me with a wealth of actual, practical, applicable information on crop rotation, the whys, and how they do it.

With all the information on how to run a successful small market-garden, I honestly did not expect a section of the book to be devoted to different vegetables and how to grow them, but the first appendix is devoted to just that. It isn’t as comprehensive as some vegetable-growing books and guides, and the varieties he prefers are (obviously) more cold-tolerant than the kinds I would choose for the heat of Texas, but the information he DOES provide is great. He gives the common name, the plant family and fertilization needs (good to know for crop rotation), intensive spacing requirements, days in the garden (which may or may not be days to maturity depending on if he direct seeds that plant or not, but it’s easy to tell which are which) and some other various bits of information and notes on the plant in question. The rest of the appendices are also jewels and contain, in a condensed format, information that was otherwise scattered throughout the book, such as the different tools they use and how to source them, or other books to reference.

All in all, I can’t recommend the book highly enough.

Best book on this subjetc ever

Every topic has generations of development. It starts out with the pioneers and concepts then as people start practicing it starts to develop into personal art. Where Elliot Coleman started, and did a great job of launching thousands of small farms that are well enough organized that a couple of acres can give a family and some employees a good income and fill in the gaps left in our industrialized food system, this book brings down to earth in the most succinct way possible every part of operating a market garden.

Fortier is the next generation, one of the acolytes that took his master's work and greatly expanded on it. I have a library of such books but none of them are as readable or as information rich in a short chapter as Fortier's book. While most of these books sit in my library as reference material I actually could not put this book down because from cover to cover material was covered in as few words as possible while giving a rich detailed cover of topic after topic, walking you through the entire operation and then following with very good resources on where to find the materials used and mentioned in the book.

It might be possible to improve on this book but it is hard to imagine how. It would be nice to see this book folded into a larger picture as part of a larger permaculture site that includes perennial fruits and herbs but I find no fault with the author for sticking to his topic and area of expertise. No matter what your accomplishments in the area of vegetable or market gardening, this book can give you some ideas for how to do some things better. If you have a permaculture site but want to grow your own food, this is probably the only book you will ever need on how to make growing vegetables a viable operation with the least amount of work and investment.

Put this book to work
By jr33
If your copy of Eliot Coleman's The New Market Gardener is starting to fall apart, you need this book. A young farmer friend of mine once wisely said that there's no use in being ecologically sustainable is you cannot be economically sustainable. This book takes it to the next level to achieve both. I just finished our tenth year of small-scale vegetable growing for markets, and I am just in awe of this book. Eliot got me this far. Jean-Martin will help us make this place truly economically sustainable.

What this book IS: A book to help new farmers or experienced farmers make a living growing food for local people on small acreage with few inputs. The charts, planting information, rotations, etc. are so valuable because they are specific. Naturally farmers will need to tweak them given their own microclimates and practices, but everyone needs something to build on. Using this book instead of only having personal experience will save new farmers years of learning. If you are not new to biologically-intensive farming, you will find yourself coming up with all kinds of ideas for incorporating these ideas into your own production system. Joel Salatin says in his book that You Can Farm. This book shows you all the details you need to actually do it.

What this book is NOT:
-- It's not a tract on healthful eating avoiding GMO's, etc. OF COURSE it is good for that, but people wanting more information on those kind of topics should educate themselves with books or articles devoted them.
-- It is not designed to fit every single farmer's current needs. Maybe you don't yet have a seed house or a cooler. If you stick with this lifestyle, you will. And the book will be there for you on that day.
-- It's not going to be a formula for all farmers in all zones or even all continents. There isn't a recipe for farming. But the practices are flexible and tweakable, so build on it.
