Great intro book for aspiring type designers

Acknowledging that "mastering the art of arranging letters in space and time is essential knowledge for anyone who crafts communications for page or screen," this book's focus is on letterforms themselves and even creating them (type design) rather than on arranging them beautifully (typography). Type design is an art (or perhaps 'craft' would be a better word) that requires a blend of both technical and visual skills, and in fact covers such a broad range of disciplines that it can be somewhat intimidating. But, this book seems to provide a "friendly, openhearted introduction" to type design, with a brief overview of the history of the written and printed word, typeface classification and terminology, case studies and type design exercises. There are also interviews with some of the luminaries in this field, including renowned type designer Christian Schwartz, whom I remember when he was starting out at the age of 14!

As in any visual art, type design is a matter of developing your eye, so learning to really look at letters critically is essential. The chapter of this book that I think might be most helpful to the beginning type designer is appropriately titled "Designing Typefaces", which illustrates many of the subtle tricks a designer must use to compensate for optical illusions and such. This is the one area that separates professional type designers from the wannabes, and I must confess that I'm still trying to master it. So, I suggest book-marking this chapter. [...]

His writings here on prayer, God, prophecy, the human condition, and the spiritual life vividly communicate his instinct for the holy dimension of all existence.

Engaging introduction to Heschel

I am not a consummate expert on Heschel, by any means, but I found these "Essential Writings" to be highly engaging and informative about Heschel's unique perspective on Judaism. This compilation made by his daughter provides just enough background information to give the beginning reader a sense of who Heschel was, why he believed the Jewish faith (and faith in general) is so important. For Heschel, the spirit of prophetic Justice, of making the world better, had to be guided by an inner life of reverential awe and of prayer. Experts of Heschel may find parts of his writings missing here, for in a career of so many writings, how can one volume summarize it all? Suffice it to say this book is a good way to whet the appetite of those curious for more of Heschel's thought.

A prophetic reflection of what the Jewish faith offers the world

As a Quaker (Chrisitian) I have longed for an accessible book of writings about the Jewish faith that I can use to deepen my own understanding and draw inspiration from. I learned about this book from Rabbi Michael Lerner of the progressive Jewish magazine, Tikkun. I have huge admiration for those Jews who can use their faith to mount a balanced and dignified prophetic critique of the plight of the Palestinians. Lerner does that, but he counts Heschel as his mentor, and being now half way thorugh this book, relishing it like a fine malt whisky, I can see why Heschel is so highly acclaimed.

What this book does for me is that it brings up to date the prophetic tradition of such likes as Jeremiah, Isaiah, Ezekiel and Amos. It shows that the message of those crusty old bearded characters in their sandals are still acutely relevant to us today. Heschel places God at the heart of his activism (which included standing side by side with Martin Luther King). I find this powerful, because there is a lot of talk these days about "Godless spirituality", and I don't find that satisfying because it misses out on the very flesh and blood human nature of the love that we are talking about, and to which the activist may be pushed to rest back into, and experience.

Another thing I am finding in Heschel is his depth of reflection on Jewish community. I was raised on the Scottish Isle of Lewis, and the same as Heschel says for the Jews could be said for our Presbyterian people. For example, p. 110, "Being a Jew makes anonymity impossible. A Jew represents, stands for, proclaims - even in spite of himself. The world never sees the Jew as an individual but rather as a representative of a whole tradition, of a whole people. A Jew is never alone." And what I like about that is the depth to which it surpasses individualistic spirituality. As that great Jewish mystical teacher, Jesus said, "When two or three are gathered together, I am there." This is not just about me, or you: it is about us, about the community. That is something that the Jewish tradition(s) can teach us so profoundly from their heart. And in saying that, I speak as one who believes we need to go beyond interfaith "dialogue" (in the head), and onwards, as Heschel demonstrates, to what I call interfaith APPRECIATION (in the heart), recognising that we should be wary of criticising one another's traditions from the outside until we find ourselves able to love what is truly spiritual in them from within.

One last point: this book is compiled with a commentary by Heschel's daughter, Susannah Heschel. She clearly has a similar depth as the old man. I find reading of the love with which she speaks of "my father" as she expounds his life and ideas deeply touching as an example of what father-daughter relationship can aspire to. There is no sense in her commentary of slavishly trotting out the old man's ideas. Rather, there is a sense of her having reached a stage in life where she can stand in her father's lineage as an equal, and speak of him as a profound friend.

This book is a modern spiritual classic. In an era where many of us, myself very much included, are critical of what the state of Israel does to the Palestinians, I would urge that this book is read and used to reveal that state politics and prophetic spirituality are far from being the same thing. As Heschel says in the passage I quote above, "A Jew represents, stands for, proclaims - even in spite of himself." This is a hallmark of authentic spirituality.

Eye opening

I found this book, as well as others by Heschel, in the Thomas Merton section of the Abbey of Gethsemani bookshop. I will be forever grateful to Merton for introducing me to Heschel. This book by his daughter opened my eyes to a whole new world of philosophy and social awareness. One quote that I personally thought summed up so many aspects of life is, "Racial prejudice gives you the most amount of hate for the least amount of reason." I have ruminated on that one quote for many many hours. I feel this is a must read for anyone exploring, themselves, religion, or life in general.

About the Author
Dr. Michael K. Ong is an Executive Vice President and Chief Risk Officer for the Americas for Credit Agricole Indosuez in New York. He has enterprise-wide responsibility for all risk management functions for the Carr Futures Group globally and CAI's North American entities. He is a member of the Executive Committee and additionally, he is a member of the board for Carr Global Advisors. Before joining Credit Agricole Indosuez Michael was the senior vice president and head of enterprise risk for ABN Amro Bank. There he was responsible for the management of information and decision support function for the executive committee on enterprise-wide market, operational, credit and liquidity risk, as well as RAROC and ROE models. Prior to this Michael headed the corporate research unit at First Chicago NBD Corporation, where he was chair of the global risk management research council and head of the market risk analysis unit. He was previously also responsible for quantitative research at Chicago Research and Trading Group (now Nations Banc-CRT) and has served as an assistant professor of mathematics at Bowdoin College. Michael is also an adjunct professor at the Stuart School of Business of the Illinois Institute of Technology. He received a BS degree in physics, cum laude, from the University of the Philippines and degrees of MA in physics and MS and PhD in applied mathematics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Michael is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Financial Regulation and Compliance and the Journal of Risk.

A delightful insight on Kepler's laws of planetary orbits!

I found this text one Saturday afternoon while shopping at a university bookstore in Denver. I am a candidate for the M.S. degree in astronomyand physics and doing my thesis on Johannes Kepler and his three laws of planetary motion. While browsing through the physics section, I saw this text right in front of me. I spent the next half-hour thumbing through the pages. I purchased it, and I'm using it for part of my thesis. I also am part-time faculty at a unversity in the Denver area. I have shared this wonderful text with students and other faculty members. There are full explanations of orbits, detailed drawings, equations, and sample problems. Orbits include those of planets, moons, man-made satellites, asteroids and comets. I find it an enjoyable book for all that are interested in astronmony from the junior high student through a professional in the field.

Hard to follow

The book provides quite a well rounded basis, with good diagrams, but some of his calculation methods are a little hard to follow. I much much preferred Orbital Motion by A.E. Roy. It depends though on how you are used to seeing the formulas. I know some people find this book much easier.

LYNDA LEE KAID is Professor of Communication and George Lynn Cross Research Professor at the University of Oklahoma where she also serves as the Director of the Political Communication Center and supervises the Political Commercial Archive. She is the author or editor of 14 books, including The Electronic Election, New Perspectives on Political Advertising, Mediated Politics in Two Cultures, Political Advertising in Western Democracies and Political Campaign Communication: A Bibliography and Guide to the Literature.

ANNE JOHNSTON is an Associate Professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She has authored and co-authored work on cross-cultural studies of political broadcasting, styles and strategies in political advertising, and women and the media. Her articles have appeared in the Journal of Applied Communication Research, Journalism Quarterly, Journal of Communication, and Political Communication.
