About the Author

Prem Kumar Rajaram is Associate Professor of Sociology and Social Anthropology at the Central European University, Hungary. In his research, Prem Kumar Rajaram is particularly interested in questions of marginality and depoliticisation. His research has focused on the government of asylum-seekers, particularly those in detention in Europe and Australia, and on colonial histories of state making. He is particularly interested in the limits of politics, looking at individuals and groups excluded from political participation and seeing what their exclusion says about the nature of the political.

About the Author
Alan Revere holds a unique position in the jewelry community, with one foot firmly planted as a master goldsmith and award-winning designer and the other as one of the country s most prominent jewelry educators. After earning degrees in both psychology and sculpture, Revere s passion led him to Germany, where he trained under some of the 20th century s most celebrated goldsmiths and designers. Returning to California with skills rarely taught in the United States, Mr. Revere was asked to share what he had learned with other jewelers and students. In 1979, he founded the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts in San Francisco, now one of the country s foremost jewelry training programs. Alan Revere is past president of the American Jewelry Design Council and founder of the Contemporary Jewelry Design Group. In addition to designing and selling thousands of pieces of jewelry, Mr. Revere has created instructional books, articles and videos for jewelry makers. Fantastic Book

I am now training my son to carry on our family business and I purchased the book to assist with his training. It is by far the most organized and best book available on how to make fine jewelry. fabulous examples of making jewelry from metal stock.

If you are interested in making jewelry from sheet metal, wire, and bar stock (as opposed to casting) you will love this book. It has the clearest set of instructions and illustrations that I have seen and I have read numerous titles. The examples are interesting, illustrative of techniques, and varied. If you are new to jewelry fabrication this is a "'must have" book that will answer many of your questions.

Beautiful book, wonderfully illustrated and written

The illustrations and steps are very detailed. If you know the basic jewelry techniques you should be able to follow the steps to create some beautiful pieces and you'll learn a lot along the way from a master. I'm a beginner, yet I've already completed the earrings. It was a great lesson in sawing and did much to improve my confidence and skill.

Nice overview but lacks detail

"The Illustration Handbook" is an acceptable overview of illustation art over the past 150 years. About 250 artists from the U.S.A., U.K. and Europe are profiled . A number of these artists are better known for their fine art, such as Aubrey Beardsely, Alphonse Mucha, M.C. Escher, and Kathe Kollwitz, but because they also did book illustration and advertising art during their careers they are included here. However, in regard to content, don't expect much. The work of each artist is summarized in just a single paragraph and only one to six samples of their art work is provided. Unfortunately, the book is small (6" x 8") therefore, while decently reproduced, the artwork is too small to be useful to study detail or fully appreciate the artists' skills. The book originally published in 1990 has not been updated, so a number of artists listed as still living are now deceased. As noted the book is an acceptable introduction to the genre and artists; it introduced me to a number of U.K. and European illustrators with whom I was not aware. It is an OK book given the price, but anyone interested in illustration art would be better served by more comprehensive texts, such as Walt Reed's classic "The Illustrator in America: 1860-2000" and the recently published "Masters of American Illustration - 41 Illustrators and How They Worked" by Fred Taraba.

Getting Into Robert's Rules

Most people who encounter Robert's Rules for the first time come away believing that it is designed to enable lawyers and other initiates to take control of meetings and thwart the good intentions of everyday people, to numb the mind of anyone who tries to read it, or both. This is a shame because Robert's, once you understand it, really does help organizations conduct their business and make decisions efficiently and democratically.

The problem is how do you get to the point where you understand Robert's Rules well enough to make use of it. The solution is Jim Slaughter's new book. In under 150 pages, Jim explains the basic concepts that underlie Robert's Rules' 700 plus pages,and does so in language that is crisp, clear, and easy to follow. At the same time, he manages to identify, and to address, most of the procedural issues you are likely to encounter in chairing, or participating in, most meetings. He even gives examples of the right words to use in many parlimentary situations. While Jim's book doesn't answer all of the questions (there is a reason why Robert's Rules is as long as it is) it gives you enough of an understanding that you can then turn to Robert's Rules with confidence and find the answer you need.

I'm a lawyer who spends most of his time representing and advising condominium and community assocations. Many of my clients would benefit from a better understanding of Robert's Rules and I can think of no better way of getting that undertstanding than by reading Jim Slaughter's new book. I am recommending it every chance I get.

Fantastic volume provides the core material you need.

This slim volume will give you all the basics you need to get up and running before your next meeting. This fits in nicely between Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised In Brief, 2nd edition (Roberts Rules of Order in Brief) and the full statement of the rules upon which this book is based, Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised, 11th edition. The official "In Brief" book, which I highly recommend, might be a bit too brief and to complete your education this Fast Track book will do quite well. It explains (among other things) all of the most common motions you will need (more then is covered in "In Brief"), elections, and gives practical advice to new members / presiding officers. Finally, you will be hard pressed to find a better tutor then Jim Slaughter who is well respected in parliamentary circles for his ability to clearly explain concepts that may at first glance seem tricky.

Invaluable Resource for Church Leaders

Jim Slaughter's book is one of the best new additions to my bookshelf.

Chapter 11 on "Meeting Minutes" is worth the price of the book and I hope to get it into the hands of every Pastor and Church Board Secretary under the jurisdiction of the Office I serve. Chapter 10 on "Order of Business and Agenda" is another great chapter as is Chapter 3, "The Motion: How Things are Done in Meetings". While most Church Board meetings operate on a relatively informal basis, more carefully planned board meetings with just the right amount of structure would result in both greater effectiveness and efficiency. And when a board is effective and efficient, those who serve on it are more likely to feel they have invested their time well.

Jim is a professional parliamentarian who knows his stuff, but he understands that different organizations need to be able to function differently. The Idiot's Guide lives up to its billing as a fast-track reference; and, it is user-friendly. It won't bog you down. Jim makes it a fun and informative read - which is no small accomplishment when the subject is Robert's Rules!

NOT REALLY A "BIOGRAPHY," BUT NEVERTHELESS QUITE INSIGHTFUL

Philip Glass (born 1937) is a composer of "classical" music who has also achieved a measure of "popular" fame. Robert Maycock, an English music writer and critic, has written a fascinating the insightful portrait of him (the subheading on my copy of the book is "A Portrait," not "a Biography," and is a much more accurate description of the work). There are numerous biographical details that come out in the course of the book, but don't expect this to be a "composer's biography" in the Maynard Solomon sense.

Glass first achieved recognition as a composer in the so-called "minimalist" tradition. Of his music from the "minimalist" period (e.g., Music in Twelve Parts, Two Pages: Contrary Motion - Music in Fifths), Maycock says, "The music of that period is essential Glass and is as far as some listeners have ever gone. What followed does not seem so different at first, but over the decades it has continued to evolve until it has reached a kind of music that is only distantly related, in the way that a great-grandchild might bear a family resemblance to the first generation. The attitude and the content change. So it follows that listening practices need to change, too."

But Maycock notes importantly, "Of the composers who came to maturity in the age of minimalism, Glass has developed more than any, while remaining to some extent an outsider to mainstream traditions." Glass himself wrote, "The true minimalism was really over by the end of 'Music In Twelve Parts,' composed in 1974. If you look in the history books and the university curricula, they tend to write about those pieces because that's what they know. There's 25 years of music that they're missing."

In the last 30 years (covered by this book, which was published in 2002), Glass has expanded his output, particularly exploring the symphonic genre, with mixed reviews: "Classical critics too did not like the Glass: Low Symphony, but that is a situation that crops up again and again with his work." Glass has also written film scores for movies like "Kundun," and his music was used in the movie "The Truman Show."

Maycock writes, "it is a fact that Glass works a lot. He takes on projects when he is already busy, he accepts commissions that apparently distract him from his main artistic focus and ... he has composed a substantial body of orchestral music without ever intending to."

For fans of Glass, or for those seeking a perceptive introduction to his work, this book is highly recommended.

Not really a biography, but a terrific reference book

Finally there's a comprehensive book about Glass and his music, with a musicologist's approach.
I think it's exactly the book that was needed, because, even if traces mr.Glass's biography in very broad strokes, the book is more of anan analysis of his music in its different forms.
I think it's a terrific book because:
1- It's by an independent writer, so no hagiography, but a very objective and interesting analysis, all the more valuable for that.
For example, the author is not shy of talkingabout controversial issues, like the critics' attitude towards mr.Glass. (you know, those guys that sneer at his music because it does
not conform to the standards they already have pre-set in their minds)
2- The general tone is that of a vey well-researched and authoritative (if somewhat kinda too concise) book, aimed perhaps more to the informed listener than to the professional musician, which is just fine with me.
It is, actually, a very readable book, especially enlightening when explaining Glass's musical evolution. It really gives you the idea of how and why the music has evolved the way it did.
3- The descriptions of the pieces are great. They're just
like very well written but concise program notes, which is
nothing less than what this marvelous music deserves.
To give you an idea, it's so refreshing to read about the Low Symphony discussed in the same terms of a mainstream full-fledged classical symphony! (which is exactly what it is, in its peculiarly Glassian way)
4- The writer had mr.Glass's endorsement, so there are a few illuminating interviews and, above all,tantalizing descriptions of the pieces that aren't yet recorded , like symphony 6, cello and piano concertos, because the author could listen to the composers' tapes from the performances.
( as you will have gathered, this book is VERY up-to-date)
By the way, are you guys at Nonesuch sleeping? Where the hell are those cd's?? Just reading mr. Maycock's enthusiastic description of the 6th symphony gave me a glance at what we're missing. I know corporate guys don't really care about the music, but hey, Glass SELLS!!
A few minor quibbles: there are no photos and the chronological list of works that closes the book is a bit too concise ( usually in such lists you also get details like first performance, recordings etc.)
Strongly recommended, nonetheless.

Resoundingly disappointing

Easily one of the worst books I've ever read.

I expected an analysis and I got an egotistical self-aggrandizing viewpoint from a writer who clearly missed the fundamental compelling nature of Glass's music.

Interviews with Glass were ramblings on how poorly classical music is disseminated to common people by writers who don't understand music in general. Duh.

No significant comparisons or parallels are ever made to place Glass within a context of modern innovators of music theory and no thorough examination is made of Glass's most critical works.

Much too much writing about how Glass's music remains unacceptable to the stagnant community of classical American composers. Guess what? When you innovate in a conservative social environment it takes awhile before your ideas catch on. Who knew?

Glass is no angel but he has contributed significantly to the repertoire of modern music and the important matter at hand is HOW and WHY that has occurred.

When I read other documents and interviews about what Glass says about his own work I gain knowledge about both Glass and music in general. By contrast this book is a rambling soliloquy of the writer's revelation that music actually exists outside of his own narrow 19th century understanding of it.

Forget this book: Go get some CD's of Glass's recordings. If you're more into the popular side of music get Koyaanisqatsi and you will get a feel for why Glass's music is compelling in a popular genre. If you can handle an experimental edge get the rest of his works and listen to somebody compellingly perform well outside the core of music theory.

Along the way Willy learns an aspect of black life that undercuts the racism all around him, and both boys learn deeply the ways of the woods from Garnet’s Uncle Charles. At their segregated high schools both boys become football stars, and are forced to meet again in a final game the last year before integration, by the racist school board determined to “show them who’s boss” one last time.
The journey continues with their enlistment in the Marines, and Willy’s passage through boot camp, advanced infantry training, and on into Vietnam, one month behind Garnet. Along the way Willy discovers aspects of darkness in himself—and in us all—that he had never suspected were there, and learns that he is far more than he had ever been taught he was. The skills he learned in the woods as a child serve him and preserve him in Vietnam, where he kills another human being for the first time and witnesses some of the terrible face of war. After six months in a line unit he realizes the men are simply being used as bait by superiors who have no idea of the reality of the war they are fighting, and he volunteers for a long-range reconnaissance unit that goes into North Vietnam. On their second mission a sick member of the team is replaced at the last minute by The Reaper, a member of the assassination units that go behind enemy lines, who turns out to be Garnet. The two then enter North Vietnam and have to confront the reality of the racism they were both subjected to, and what their truest bond is as fellow human beings, before the war brings them both to a place they had never thought to go.
Along the way we meet characters that remain powerful in memory: Maisie, Garnet’s mother and housekeeper for Willy’s family; Charles, her brother, expert woodsman and carpenter who refuses to bow to the racism that governs so much of black life in the South; Mr. T., Willy’s football coach in high school, who teaches him how to reach beyond himself; Carol, a vain beauty who uses everyone around her, including Willy; Ann, who teaches Willy what love really is before he goes off to war; Plato, a black recruit who teaches Willy the meaning of his own attitudes about race; Cerberus, a three-tour black-ops sergeant who tells Willy what the real darkness he is entering is like; and a nameless Buddhist monk and former soldier who in the midst of a war shows Willy what real peace might mean.
In an epilogue Willy chronicles his difficult passage from the war back into life, and how he comes to fulfill the promise he made to Garnet.

A masterful exploration of human nature

I had the privilege of reading David Reid's remarkable novel as a manuscript, and was swept up in the experience. It is so good to see that it is now available as an ebook!

Mr. Reid's rhythmic, flowing writing is like a novel-length prose poem. Totally accessible, reflective, not afraid to tell its story at a pace that permits reflective, personal exploration by the writer and reader alike. The book is knitted together with a rich, mature spiritual thread - not didactic or concrete, but imbued with an awareness of both the immense darkness and the glorious heights of the human experience, each character crafted adeptly , fleshed out - spirited out! - perfectly. This is not a fast-paced page-burner, but a thoroughly researched, historically based story of two men, their world, their tragedy, their victory.

I am love with this book, and recommend it enthusiastically.

Essential for travel planning

Combines parts of the Lonely Planet guides for Russia (and I assume China and Mongolia) into a one-source book. Great focus on many different paths for a trans-Russia itinerary. If you are seriously considering making the trip, this is the book to buy!!

Summer guide only

A lot of stuff they write about is closed in winter and they just don't provide information at all about winter travel in some places making the guide frustrating sometimes.
They also don't always list the names of things in the native language (Russian, Mongolian, Chinese so when you are looking for something on a sign it is impossible to find or figure out.
It is nice that it is digital though so I can just have it on my phone and I did find some good restaurants (when open) using the guide just don't use it as your travel bible.
I got the trans-Siberian handbook by Bryn Thomas and Anna Kaminski and liked that they include native language names and the time difference from Moscow for every town (very helpful on the train). Although there winter info is a little off also.
