Perfect for those who need to take the Illinois Assessment of Professional teaching (APT) Exam (188)

This book is PERFECT for anyone who has to take the Illinois Assessment of Professional Teaching (APT) Pre–K through Grade 12 (188) Exam, for teaching (sometimes gradating) in the state of Illinois. When I first took the APT exam, I scored a 226, which was only fourteen points away from passing. I was ambivalent about purchasing this book, so I rented it from the Forest Park Library (for free!). After sitting down with this book for a week and a half, I went back in to take my test, and was able to score a 270 out of 300!!!

If you already used the practice questions on the ILTS website, and needed an explanation as to WHY the answer is what it is and want a comprehensive practice guide, look no further.

What this book contains is 100 practice questions, that are very much like the ones that appear on the APT exam. All of the answers are explain, IN DEPTH, as to why certain answers are better than other. This book also breaks down the four segments of the test (Development and Learning, Learning Environment, Instruction and Assessment, Professional Environment), and reiterates many different areas of important that may have been missed or forgotten from previous classes. It includes a rundown on topics such as, scaffolding, chunking, blooms taxonomy, several emotional/behavioral disorders, and pretty much every other topic that will appear on the exam. Its a concise and comprehensive guide that is a blessing for those, who took secondary education classes, and don't remember about all of the content that was glossed over in earlier child development classes. It also gives you advice on the written section as well as tips for taking the test and other handy methods such as the "would you put five dollars down on your answer?" kinds of methods which I enjoyed.

My two colleges and I were so happy to find this book after looking at all of the other practice guides we saw on amazon, I couldn't have been happier with our decision to try this one. Hope this review helps! Good luck on your test =D

Joshua M. Greene has produced films for PBS and Disney, has served as vice president for New York’s largest PR firm, and was appointed director of strategic planning for the United Nations Peace Summit of Religious and Spiritual Leaders. He was also an adjunct professor at Hofstra University in New York. His previous works include the best-selling Here Comes the Sun: The Spiritual and Musical Journey of George Harrison; Justice at Dachau: The Trials of an American Prosecutor;Witness: Voices from the Holocaust; and Gita Wisdom: An Introduction to India’s Essential Yoga Text. In 1970, he was initiated as Yogesvara Das by Bhakivedanta Swami Prabhupada and served for thirteen years in Prabhupada’s society as director of French-language publications.

A Prefect Introduction

I found Gita Wisdom to be a perfect introduction to the Bhagavad-gita. The author's insights provide a very practical application of this ancient wisdom into 21st century life. I also found it helpful that the author is a practitioner rather than merely a scholarly eye looking in from the outside. This is a great book.

"Bhagavad Gita" translates into English as "Song of the Supreme Person" and is a founding document upon which the Hindu religion and Yoga traditions are based. It is also the story of an epic war between two massive armies of four million soldiers with all the panoply of an ancient battlefield that included warrior elephants, gold-plated war chariots, beating drums, men grimly bent on killing other men with bows and arrows, spears and clubs. "Gita Wisdom: An Introduction To India's Essential Yoga Text" translated and provided with extensive footnoting by Joshua M. Greene is the 'story within the story' of prince Arujuna who foreseeing the carnage to come and turns to his friend and advisor Krishna (who also serves as Arjuna's charioteer). Maybe a primer?

If your new to the concepts in the Bhagavad Gita then this might be a good place for you to start. It's an easy way to read some of it. The author putting his thoughts at the beginning of each section acts as quick summary of the proceeding passages.

If you're familiar with reading philosophic topics then I'd jump straight to the source for reading and reflection. Mainly because the author doesn't add a new interpretation of topics than what can be seen at face value from the text.

Swinging between bad and brilliant but reaching a point of equilibrium that is excellent

I stumbled across this book on kindle while searching for a history of Mercia and I wasn't at all looking for a novel. I downloaded the sample anyway and it proved to be very substantial, taking us through Penda's childhood all the way to the first major historical event in Anglo Saxon history which could have involved our hero. I don't want to give too many spoilers in this review - but I don't think anyone can object if I say that this event is the battle of Chester.

Unfortunately, I cannot imagine that many readers will bother to pay to go on beyond the sample. The style is as clunky as a diesel version of a Soviet era Lada. The dramatic entry of a Cassandra figure into the hall of Penda's father is greeted by the Lord with the words "nice of you to drop in" (it is a good idea to avoid trying to use pseudo contemporary language - but this can be taken too far). The author (on kindle there were no illustrations so I guess this is just Peter Goodsir ) also seems in this early part of the book to be rushing to set the scene using some very tired clichés, for example there has to be a childhood fight with another boy after which they make up (boys will be boys) and then become lifelong best friends, in this case this takes a couple of paragraphs between an unprovoked assault and the hand shake.

So why did I bother going on beyond the sample? I'm far too tight fisted to pay money for dross. The reason I went on is probably that even from the sample it was apparent that behind the clunky prose was a superb story line. It was also pretty clear that this was going to be an attempt to show the history behind the Arthurian legends. It might seem a little strange explaining the legend of a Celtic Christian icon by referring to a pagan Anglian King. However, it is not a new idea and in fact Penda is the most probable source of at least some of the legends. So I was interested to see how the story would develop, also despite the style the characters introduced in the sample were really good. The book is positioned somewhere between Rosemary Sutcliff and Bernard Cornwell, but the people in the book seem to be more rounded adults than in Sutcliff and are far more credible than the Sharpe character in all his different guises within the Cornwell books.

My expectations were low of the downloaded full text. I just hoped that the story wasn't going to get too mystical, I wanted as much history as possible with only a dash of magic. I was genuinely shocked at the change in the book from the very moment the battle scene finished. It was like a different author had taken over, although I imagine it is more likely that Mr Goodsir felt that once he had firmly anchored his story in a historical context he was free to write the book he had wanted to write from the beginning - and that is a very good book.

The novel I imagine Peter Goodsir wanted to write, and in the end did write, does have an awful lot more mysticism and magic than I'd originally wanted. However, on reflection this is not such a bad thing. To understand why the historical events surrounding the rise and fall of King Penda of the Mercians could have inspired the creation one of the world's most popular legends I think we need to understand that the people creating the legend genuinely believed in magic and the best way to do that is put yourself in their position by becoming absorbed in the story as they might have imagined it.

In short this is far more than just a ripping yarn and I hope it gets a wide audience. Please read on beyond the sample.

Very good for struggling in Real Analysis

There is no problem solutions for Real Analysis texts available in U.S. since most of the teachers believe that Math students in grad level should be more creative. However, not all students in Real Analysis are potential mathmatician. If they lost in class and must study by theirselves, they may feel frustrated missing all the stuff contained in problems. The material in "Principles of Real Analysis" may not superior much than other famous text(like Royden, I think Royden is clear enough but too much mysterious things lie in problems.). But use it with this workbook, you will find much comfortable in self study. It helps a lot not only in my homework assignment, but also in my understanding.

Must have for anyone taking Real Analysis

Before buying this book, I was failing Real Analysis. Now I have a prayer of passing. Thank goodness I found it in time. For it to be of use, you need to buy the companion book "Principles of Real Analysis", same authors. On the down side, it doesn't have an index, but overall, well worth the money. Besides, it is the only source I've found of worked-out Real Analyis problems outside of borrowing from other students who have already taken the course.

Murder, New England

M. William Phelps wrote more than twenty non-fiction books and is the star of “Dark Minds” on the Investigation Discovery channel. He wrote “The Devil’s Rooming House” and ‘The Devil’s Right Hand”, and lives in a rural farming community. The cover shows a covered bridge. Bridges were covered to keep the rain and snow from their wooden planks so horse’s hoofs wouldn’t slip on wet wood. This book has eight true crimes that occurred in New England states over the last three centuries. I think he covered too wide a range. The stories are of varying interest and importance. The ‘Introduction’ discusses murder in general. People kill for love, money, or revenge. Most murderers and their victims know each other.

Chapter 1 tells about a murder in Rhode Island in February 1673. Rebecca Cornell was murdered in her house and her body partly burned. Her son was convicted and hanged. William Beadle’s wife and four children were found murdered in their Connecticut home (Chapter 2). Beadle’s business was doing poorly and he didn’t want his family to suffer. Later he killed himself in November 1782. [“Family suicides” also happened in Wisconsin in the 1890's, “Wisconsin Death Trip”.] A woman was attacked in her New Hampshire home in September 1821 (Chapter 3). Her daughter accused Daniel Farmer. He was convicted and hanged. During the economic depression of June 1879 John Kemmler killed his young daughters in Holyoke Massachusetts (Chapter 4). He was afraid for their future because of their poverty. Kemmler was hanged.

Chapter 5 tells about organized crime in Boston Massachusetts from the 1930's to the late 1960's. In December 1931 new men took over organized crime by eliminating the competition. In the fall of 1961 there was a gang war, the Winter Hill Gang won. Whitey Bulger was not just the leader but cooperated with the FBI. Bulger went into hiding in 1995 but was caught by the FBI sixteen years later. Chapter 6 tells about a rock band. One member had a wealthy great aunt and lived in her three-decker house. This aunt supported him then made a will naming him as her sole heir. Then she had an accident, she appeared to have fallen down the stairs. A year later one member of that band told a friend what really happened, and he went to the police. There was a confession and convictions.

Chapter 7 tells about the death of a man who made signs and lettered trucks and cars. Was he killed by a horse in the barn? His head was crushed. There were spent shell casings on the floor. His wife had rebellious children from her first marriage. The son had dried blood drops on his pants. He later confessed and said his mother encouraged him! They were convicted. A wife went out jogging at night and never returned (Chapter 8). The investigation led to the caretaker on a large estate whose owner was on vacation; the caretaker had a record. Then the body was found hidden on the estate. The caretaker was convicted of the murder. The author warns against taking the same route when jogging. [He is wrong; the better solution for a long female jogger is to carry a pistol for defense.]

About the Author

Paul Johannesson holds a position as a professor at Stockholm University, where he works in the area of information systems. Johannesson has published more than 100 journal and conference papers on topics including federated information systems, languages for conceptual modelling, the use of linguistic instruments in information systems, process integration, e-commerce systems design, and e-health solution interoperability. He has also worked on design science methodology and applied it in numerous industrial projects.

Erik Perjons holds a position as a senior lecturer at Stockholm University. His research includes topics such as enterprise modelling, business process management, service oriented architecture, and knowledge management. He has published over 50 publications in international journals and conferences, participated in several national and international research projects in domains such as health care, e-government and telecom. In many of these projects, design science research has been applied.

Reflects quite well and with a wide scope the current status of design science in its nascent status. It can be anticipated that this introduction text needs updates in the near future as the design science evolves towards its mature stage. Maybe the much needed holistic and synthesizing aspect in design science remains still unopened.
