Another entrant in the growing collection of Holocaust memoirs, Darvas, the daughter of a Jewish father and German mother, shares her story of survival during World War II. Her family escaped the Nazi terror in Berlin to resettle in Prague. Yet the Nazis followed six years later, and Darvas's family sent her away in the hope that she would escape. After a lonely and harrowing journey through the mountains of Czechoslovakia and Poland, Darvas, then 12 years old, wound up on one of the Kindertransports to Britain. Although she was shuttled between foster homes and boarding schools, she struggled to keep her sense of self and family alive during this tumultuous time and lived to see the end of the war. She immigrated to America and, after joining the U.S. Army as an adult, was once again able to visit Prague and learn of her family's destruction. In this engaging memoir, she relates in modest terms what can only be described as an extraordinary narrative of wartime survival. After witnessing her childhood sweetheart's brutal death at the hands of Nazi soldiers, Darvas and her family fled their native Germany for Prague. But when the Nazis invaded Prague, Darvas's parents thought their only recourse was to send their 12-year-old daughter to England on her own, with some help from an underground resistance movement. The journey involved, among other things, climbing the snow-covered Beskydy Mountains and outwitting Nazi bureaucrats. (Darvas's mother, trying to calm her, told her to think of the life-risking enterprise as "a great adventure.") Fortunately, Darvas, starving and cold, was given shelter and food by various strangers. But while the actions of these generous individuals momentarily restored her faith in humanity, the hellish wartime circumstances produced irrevocable emotional scars (her parents eventually perished in Nazi death camps). In rejecting a lover who wanted to marry her, Darvas movingly writes, "My fear of losing him was more powerful than my desire for him." A compelling and quick read, Darvas's story is sure to find an appreciative audience among devotees of wartime memoirs and history. (Publisher's Weekly)

Moving account

This was a moving account of a brave young girl and woman surviving a horrendous time in history. I was interested in reading it because I've been researching the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia as my grandparents and father were born there and left before the Nazis completely took over. The writing is clear and it reads like a thriller. I am amazed that the author survived but she used her intelligence and her strong will to do so. Definitely worth reading.

The courage to endure...

�You have to start something with a bang!� said Miriam Darvas, author of the recently published �Farewell to Prague.� The book is written as a memoir that chronicles her harrowing childhood in Nazi era Europe. In it, she masterfully tells the story of fifteen years, at times horrific and other times hopeful, beginning when she was just six years old. The book reads like a suspense thriller, and keeps the reader riveted � right from page one. In the opening pages, Darvas lays a shocking foundation with a story of her childhood love, Kurt Blumberg. The event that occurs is so dreadful that �I still sometimes awaken in the night to the sound of screams and the smell of blood,� she said. �My life, thereafter, became a series of aimless wandering directed by people I did not know and events I did not understand.� And therein lies the story that follows. Shortly after her young friend�s death, and with nothing but the clothes on their backs, the family escapes to Prague and establishes a new home and life. Six years later the Germans arrive in their city, and her mother and father send twelve-year-old Darvas, unaccompanied, to make her way to England. Darvas writes of her final departure from her mother: �The mass of bodies crushed the air out of me. Mother pushed me through a cluster of people hanging from the train doors and forced me into the corridor. Some unknown hands hoisted me into the luggage net. Through the top of the window I saw my mother�s head disappear in the crush of the milling crowd. I waved frantically through the open window. If only she would turn to wave. �Mother!� My cry was lost in the tumult. Oh, please dear God, let her not be lost to me, I prayed. I sensed this was my last good-bye to her, and feared I would always have to remember her being swallowed by the crowd�� Alone but for the help of strangers and a headstrong will to endure, the young girl makes the journey to England on foot, train and boat. As if the experience forged in her an unshakeable courage, her approach to life in the years that follow, though they remain rampant with near-misses and hard luck, is nothing short of astounding. �I would never again go anywhere that I did not want to go,� she writes. �I knew what I wanted: to study history at London University. I wanted to comprehend the events that created this war and gave rise to Hitler with his despotic hold over countries and peoples.� Perhaps an adventurer above all else, Darvas at one point decides to travel into Russian-occupied Prague to visit her sister and learn the fate of her family. Her means of escape from the country, as borders were closing during her stay, is the essence of what a desperate life she had come to lead. An emotionally charged story written in beautiful English, �Farewell to Prague� stands on its own in the realm of Holocaust books. It is a view into a life practically incomprehensible to most people today, especially considering Darvas�s age when she experienced it. �When you live under the stress of war,� she said, �civilization disappears. Most people who live in a civilized society don�t realize it�s a veneer, and it all goes the minute disaster occurs.� �Farewell to Prague� is the author�s first book.

A riveting memoir

"Farewell to Prague" by Miriam Darvas is a compelling memoir. Not only is it a fascinating, fast-paced story, it is beautifully written. From the first pages, the reader is gripped by the writer's simple eloquence. Then as events unfold, showing the terror of Jews caught in the Nazi sweep, the reader is emotionally involved. For example, Darvas witnesses the beating/death of a young schoolmate and friend. Though much of the emotional reaction is left unsaid, Darvas' images and words reveal the horror and trauma.
This is not a halocaust memoir per se; actually Darvas escapes the clutches of the Nazi round ups. There is much more to this story, including a tale of high adventure, revealing the verve of a young girl whose life is torn asunder. The scene where she gets on a train, knowing that she may never see her parents again, is imminently painful.
When she finds that her fastidious mother passed away in a concentration camp, an older Darvas is crushed, and the reader is, too. Also murdered was her father, a journalist who is also a poet. Many of his poems were lost, but the one included in the book, "The Sunken City" reveals a talent and a sensitivity that rests beneath the ashes of the Halocaust.
Still this book is much more than an adventure or a memory of the Halocaust ... it is an intense journey into the world of words and a different world as a young Darvas traverses Europe and arrives in England, always surviving and making do despite the danger and the traumas. While the story is riveting, making the book impossible to put down, it is the beautiful writing that makes it flow and elevates it from a mere memoir to a work of art.
Within its pages, there is a mute appeal for peace and much to be learned about other cultures. Darvas herself mentions in the preface that she "straddles two worlds ...I can live anywhere but am at home nowhere ... my roots are shallow but they spread like fingers across the globe, encompassing the world."
"Farewell to Prague" gives us more knowledge of the world (the descriptions of Europe and Prague are unforgettable) and those turbulent times that should not ever be forgotten, lest they be repeated. It is an excellent book, not only for the story, but for the philosophy behind the tale and the words used to express the horror, the hope, the honesty and the bouyancy of a young girl caught in times and circumstances beyond control and beyond belief.
"Farewell to Prague" is a triumph of the human spirit ... a sequel would be much appreciated.
