Great Start to a New Fantasy Series

Carol Berg's first novel in her trilogy makes me want to keep reading to see if Seyonne can clear his world of evil or die in the fight. Yet this is more than a story of cosmic evil. It is the story of friendship from the most unlikely sources. It is the story of personal strength in the face of systematic terror. It is the story of power hiding the heart. It is the story of love hidden behind political necessity.

Berg's writing is engagingly told from the viewpoint of Seyonne which allows us to feel his wide range of emotions and cheer for him to recover everything that slavery and conquest has taken from him. We see the world through his eyes and learn about the complex fantasy realm Berg has created in natural flowing thoughts, actions, and dialogue. While the two main characters are men, there are three strong and fairly complex female characters as well that I hope we'll see more of in later books.

Just in case you are wondering, no, our main characters are not lovers in any sense even though the description may seem similar to many gay fantasy novels out there today. No, their friendship is powerful in ways we rarely see between men in popular culture and it is one of the best features of this novel and hopefully the series.

A "mature" sword-and-sorcery

I had a great time reading this! The plot builds slowly but gathers speed as the hero, Seyonne, tries to save a repressive, slave-based tyranny from an even worse fate. The sexual content and the violence were, in my opinion, depicted appropriately for the "civilization" Berg invented and for the situations Seyonne finds himself in. However, the sex and violence were not described in extensive detail, as some authors like to do. Berg includes many familiar motifs of fantasy but always with new variations. She describes life in pre-industrial society realistically. Berg appreciates that there's good qualities in arrogant people and bad qualities in nice people. The heir to the throne is a consummate brat but also intelligent. I particularly liked the back-and-forth between the heir and his intended princess-- she's someone to look out for in the sequels, I'm sure.

Superb

I enjoyed this book very much. The writing is superb, the characterizations strong, and the world descriptions wonderful. A slave and a prince, a defanged warrior mage, and an egotistical all powerful tyrant, clash. The slave survives and the prince grows, and the two of them transform into better people who together must defeat a great threat to the world order. I don't need to repeat all the points raised by other reviews.
I suppose the outcome is predictable and the pace fluctuates, but it is a fantasy that is satisfying to me at least and it is one of the best books I've read recently.

Planning, Design and Analysis of Tailings Dams was written for geotechnical engineers, mining and metallurgical engineers, and regulatory personnel who have a fundamental knowledge of the principals of soil mechanics and water dam design. Steven G. Vick is a geotechnical engineer specializing in tailings disposal. Throughout his consulting career, Mr. Vick has explored the interface between theory and empiricism in tailings disposal. Richard E. Blahut is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He is Life Fellow of the IEEE and the recipient of many awards including the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal (1998) and Claude E. Shannon Award (2005), the Tau Beta Pi Daniel C. Drucker Eminent Faculty Award, and the IEEE Millennium Medal. He was named a Fellow of the IBM Corporation where he worked for over 30 years in 1980, and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1990.

About the Author
Joseph Heller was born in 1923 in Brooklyn, New York. He served as a bombardier in the Second World War and then attended New York University, Columbia and Oxford University, the last on a Fullbright scholarship. He taught for two years at Pennsylvania State University, before returning to New York, where he began a successful career in the advertising departments of Time, Look and McCall's magazines. It was during this time that he had the idea for Catch-22. Working on the novel in spare moments and evenings at home, it took him eight years to complete and was first published in 1961. His second novel, Something Happened was published in 1974, Good As Gold in 1979 and Closing Time in 1994. He is also the author of the play 'We Bombed in New Haven'. Joseph Heller died in 1999.

Existential masterpiece -- kindle version SUCKS>

I love this book, I've read it many times, you need to read it.

The 1 star review is for the kindle edition specifically. You can only download this book 5 times. I paid $12 for a 40 year old novel of which there are a zillion used copies for my Kindle-- and I can only download it 5 times.

In life ... sometimes you ask: "Why?"

Many of us, I'm sure, at one point or another in time have lived a life very similar to that of Heller's main character, Bob Slocum. I also have a daughter and a son close to the ages of the characters within, and have found it astounding the way he'd sometimes hit the nail on the head with resemblance in many of the conversations between father and offspring, spouse as well. The irony and comparability to my marriage, and life in general, was both hysterical and intense. I have a disabled son too, and know quite well the difficulties and complications that can and will arise, and the stress that it can place on a marriage as well. Heller did a good job at describing that (although I must credit myself with being a bit stronger about it than Bob Slocum ... to a point). There were differences as well, traits of Slocum that I didn't exactly care for, or couldn't seem to relate to; for he was in no way a perfect human being, but neither am I, nor are most of us. Though he did seem to be a bit of a bigot, a hypocrite, a womanizer and a male chauvinist, and somewhat vain and self-centered as well, these were mere flaws in the personality of a man who was basically fairly decent and normal. As different as we all may be, we all have our individual and personal flaws. Good people do have a tendency to struggle through life a lot, blindlessly at times ... constantly trying to figure it out by asking questions such as: "Why?"
This was a personable, brave, and heartfelt story from Heller, of one man's bout with fatherhood and modern life and its trials and tribulations. Though a tad depressing at times, there isn't much that can be done about that, so is life ... it's not always easy. I've read 'Something Happened' a couple of times and enjoyed it immensely both reads, though years between each. I may even read it again someday.

Excellent characterization, but often slow-going

I suppose the first thing that one should know before reading this book is that the title is a bit of a misnomer. I spent the entire 569 pages of this book waiting for something to, in fact, happen, but nothing does until the very end (and when it does the book pretty much comes to a screeching, unapologetic halt then and there).

If you can get past that, you'll do fine with this book. It is written entirely in stream-of-conciousness, from the point of view of Bob Slocum's confused and lonely mind. Truly the best thing about this book is the characterization of Bob himself; his sheer humanity is such that the more you get to know him, the harder it gets to be sure whether you should sympathize with him or depise him. It is often easy to do both simulataneously. This book takes you into the darkest corners of the mind of someone who on the surface would seem to be an average guy, and really makes you think about yourself and other people you know, the kinds of secret thoughts that everyone has and that everyone is ashamed to have.

Most of the book focuses on Bob's relationship with his family; his unnamed wife, son, and daughter and his brain-damaged son Derek. There are some very poignant moments here, although it does tend to stagnate in places where he simply reiterates the same point over and over again. He also has a tendency to jump back to certain specific details of his past for seemingly no reason at all and retell the same bits multiple times, and in sets of parantheses which often last for pages. We are, however, rewarded for our patience with these flaws whenever Bob tells us of his work life, for it is here that we get a taste of the wry humor and snappy dialogue that made Catch-22 such a joy to read.

I gave this book three stars because I did enjoy it, but it truly was difficult to get through at times. There is a lot to like here, but there is also a lot to get frustrated about, and there are moments when the bad outweighs the good. Still, any fan of Heller should add this to their collection - just be sure to read Catch-22 first.

ELEMENTARY FLUID MECHANICS BY JOHN K. VENNARD Assistant Professor of Fluid Mechanics New York University. PREFACE: Fluid mechanics is the study under all possible conditions of rest and motion. Its approaches analytical, rational, and mathematical rather than empirical it concerns itself with those basic principles which lead to the solution of numerous diversified problems, and it seeks results which are widely applicable to similar fluid situations and not limited to isolated special cases. Fluid mechanics recognizes no arbitrary boundaries between fields of engineering knowledge but attempts to solve all fluid problems, irrespective of their occurrence or of the characteristics of the fluids involved. This textbook is intended primarily for the beginner who knows the principles of mathematics and mechanics but has had no previous experience with fluid phenomena. The abilities of the average beginner and the tremendous scope of fluid mechanics appear to be in conflict, and the former obviously determine limits beyond which it is not feasible to go these practical limits represent the boundaries of the subject which I have chosen to call elementary fluid mechanics. The apparent conflict between scope of subject and beginner f s ability is only along mathematical lines, however, and the physical ideas of fluid mechanics are well within the reach of the beginner in the field. Holding to the belief that physical concepts are the sine qua non of mechanics, I have sacrificed mathematical rigor and detail in developing physical pictures and in many cases have stated general laws only without numerous exceptions and limitations in order to convey basic ideas such oversimplification is necessary in introducing a new subject to the beginner. Like other courses in mechanics, fluid mechanics must include disciplinary features as well as factual information the beginner must follow theoretical developments, develop imagination in visualizing physical phenomena, and be forced to think his way through problems of theory and application. The text attempts to attain these objectives in the following ways omission of subsidiary conclusions is designed to encourage the student to come to some conclusions by himself application of bare principles to specific problems should develop ingenuity illustrative problems are included to assist in overcoming numerical difficulties and many numerical problems for the student to solve are intended not only to develop ingenuity but to show practical applications as well. Presentation of the subject begins with a discussion of fundamentals, physical properties and fluid statics. Frictionless flow is then discussed to bring out the applications of the principles of conservation of mass and energy, and of impulse-momentum law, to fluid motion. The principles of similarity and dimensional analysis are next taken up so that these principles may be used as tools in later developments. Frictional processes are discussed in a semi-quantitative fashion, and the text proceeds to pipe and open-channel flow. A chapter is devoted to the principles and apparatus for fluid measurements, and the text ends with an elementary treatment of flow about immersed objects.

this is a generally good book. of course, but as textbooks go, this is worth it. the material is as clear as can be, so that makes it a little easier to deal with an otherwise tough subject.

Little Women is a novel by American author Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888), which was originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869. Alcott wrote the books rapidly over several months at the request of her publisher. The novel follows the lives of four sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March—detailing their passage from childhood to womanhood, and is loosely based on the author and her three sisters. Little Women was an immediate commercial and critical success, and readers demanded to know more about the characters. Alcott quickly completed a second volume, entitled Good Wives. It was also successful. The two volumes were issued in 1880 in a single work entitled Little Women. Alcott also wrote two sequels to her popular work, both of which also featured the March sisters: Little Men (1871) and Jo's Boys (1886). Although Little Women was a novel for girls, it differed notably from the current writings for children, especially girls. The novel addressed three major themes: "domesticity, work, and true love, all of them interdependent and each necessary to the achievement of its heroine's individual identity." Little Women "has been read as a romance or as a quest, or both. It has been read as a family drama that validates virtue over wealth", but also "as a means of escaping that life by women who knew its gender constraints only too well". According to Sarah Elbert, Alcott created a new form of literature, one that took elements from Romantic children's fiction and combined it with others from sentimental novels, resulting in a totally new format. Elbert argued that within Little Women can be found the first vision of the "All-American girl" and that her multiple aspects are embodied in the differing March sisters.

perennial favorite for the ages

A very early reader, I received a copy of "Little Women" at age 7. From the very first time I read this lovely book, I fancied myself as Jo, and so thoroughly identified with her that even through all the succeeding decades and thousands of other books read, this book will remain one of my top five favourite books because of her. I read and reread this book sitting in a big apple tree in my parent's back yard, laying on the grass on a summer's day, and under the sheets with a flashlight I now suspect my parents knew I had stashed under my bed.

In an age of easily digested and mass-produced books with weak characters and plot, "Little Women" is a stand-out that resists the passage of time for its exemplary characters, theme of family unity, and love on so many different levels (friendship, familial, true love, and romantic love).

Readers today might find the writing and occasional chirpiness of the March sisters when faced with their poverty a bit difficult to relate to, but knowing stories of how my own mother and sisters faced the Depression and then WWII in the UK made me realise from an early age that trying to find things to rejoice in is essential to surviving tragedy and loss on a personal level.

The March sisters encapsulate female society in most countries even now, and are well-written individual characters, each with a different goal they wish to fulfil in life. The girls do not become career women, and their parents do preach the importance of family life and sacrifice, however, each one does what was expected of young girls at that time. Jo's daring in writing a sensationalist "man's" story and insisting on payment commensurate with a man was unheard of in those days and when one considers that women are still underpaid, it makes Jo's triumph still relative today. Amy's goal of being comfortably well-off is eventually tempered by her own personal sorrow at the poor health of her own little Beth, Meg wants to be a mother and wife, and she learns not to overachieve, and Beth who overcomes pathological shyness through her altruism and empathy for others and which leads to her death is still inspirational today.

My suggestion is that if you have a daughter, sister, granddaughter or friend, take turns reading it. It will improve your vocabulary, make you smile, and dear Beth's stoicism will bring a tear to your eye.

Horrible edition

I am not rating this novel because of the amazing story, but because of the edition. Please do yourself a favor and do NOT buy any books from CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform. There's no format in this book. It literally looks like somebody found the story on some website and did a copy and paste. Even the cover is horrible, it is very low quality. If you want this book please search for "Little Women (Oxford World's Classics)" or Penguin's Classics. Those editions are 100x better and are also cheaper than the CIPP edition.

Classics are sometimes best

I read "Little Women" when I was in junior high school and I loved the book. I decided to re-read it and I am glad I did. So much fiction today is lacking in plot, character development, and thought, in short, this is good literature. This is one of the best books around for people of all ages. I so appreciate that the March family experienced the joys and pains of everyday living and handled both with dignity, spirit, and a genuine love for each other. Even though poor, the March family rose above it. So many lessons are taught in this book that young people, particularly, could benefit from reading it. I will add this to my reading list of books that I read every couple of years!
