Good, Comprehensive, and Heady
By Woodie
There's good and not so good in this book. The good is, it is very comprehensive, well organized, and authoritatively written. The bad news is, many of the concepts are complicated and difficult to follow. The writer assumes you understand many things because he doesn't bother to verbalize them very well. This is typical of an academian in my experience. Academian's like to throw something out there and wait for you to ask them what they mean. Unfortunately, that approach does not work so well in a book. To his credit, if you dwell on the ideas long enough they eventually do sink in and approach brilliance. So understanding this book is like understanding art. It takes a while to digest. That said, I recommend the book and be prepared to have your head expanded. This book turns over every stone in the quest to better understand drawing.

As an example here is a random passage I picked describing "Location and Proximity". "The relational energies of location and proximity are produced by the association of like or unlike elements according to their position on the picture plane or in a field of depth." You see what I mean? You gotta love it.

Figure Drawing Class In A Book!
By Earl Johnson
Online I did some research to see what books art schools and classes are using this one as well as a few others kept coming up! I am self taught due to time constraints, but I feel that though I didn't have a professor standing over me giving me advice, I could still gain a decent amount of information just by reading and applying the things learned in my drawing. The suggested exercises are invaluable and will take a while if properly done. I suggest using this book only after getting a basic understanding of anatomy, even though this book covers anatomy. Get a strictly anatomy book like Peck's, Richer's, or Goldfinger.

Modern Strategy, by Colin S. Gray

Modern Strategy explains the permanent nature, but ever changing character, of strategy in light of the whole strategic experience of the twentieth century. The book is a major contribution to the general theory of strategy; it makes sense of the strategic history of the twentieth century, and provides understanding of what that strategic history implies for the century to come.

The book offers a uniquely comprehensive analysis of the different facets of modern strategy. The classic writings of Carl von Clausewitz are reconsidered for their continuing relevance, while possible successors are appraised. In addition to arguing that Clausewitz figured out what strategy was, and how it worked, the book probes deeply into strategy's political, ethical, and cultural dimension. The book explains how strategic behaviour in the twentieth century has expanded from the two-dimensional world of the land and the surface of the sea, to include the ocean depths, the air, space, and most recently the 'cyberspace' environments. It also offers details analyses both of nuclear matters and of the realm of irregular violence.

This is the first comprehensive account of all aspects of modern strategy since the Cold War ended and will be essential reading for all students of modern strategy and security studies.

Neo-Clausewitzian Strategic Thought has no peers
By seydlitz89
This book is not light reading. A good background in 20th Century military history as well as Clausewitz is necessary to get the most from this very impressive work. So why bother? What are the uses of Neo-Clausewitzian Strategic Thought?
In the post 9-11 world there is no better way in my opinion to understand the Al Qaida threat. Professor Gray published this work in 1999, but his views and methodology remain as important as ever.
The reason for this is that the grammar of war changes (the ways we fight it, the increasingly complex "elements"), while the nature of war remains the same. Politics and political goals have always been the core reasons for the violent struggle of wills between polities which we call war. That was true in ancient times and remains true today.
Following Clausewitz and Gray I think one could make a very convincing case that Al Qaida is waging war in three forms simultaneously-- guerrilla war, terrorist war and revolutionary war which all put heavy emphasis on the political. With this in mind our MAIN weapon against Al Qaida should be our foreign (political) policy, not an emphasis on high-tech, military responses against obscure targets, the resulting "colateral" destruction only hurting our political policy and playing to the goals of our enemies. Such are the nuances of Clausewitzian strategic thought, far from the "war-as-ideal Mahdi of Mass" strawman usually portrayed by the great strategic theorist's detractors.
Of interest also are Gray's appreciation of the contributions of John R. Boyd, his untangling of the confusion surrounding the term "Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA), and his comments on the little known (or understood) impact of the Second Smuts Report of 1917.
In all this book is a great work in strategic thought of high intellectual merit. Of interest also is a recent article in the Spring issue of Parameters by Gray on Asymmetrical Warfare.

Fundamental Reading for National Security Dialog
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
Edit of 23 Feb 08 to add links. This book remains priceless & relevant.

First published in 1999, this is an original tour d-horizon that is essential to any discussion of the theory and practice of conflict in the 21st Century, to include all those discussions of the alleged Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA), the need for "defense transformation", and the changing nature of civil-military relations.

I am much impressed by this book and the decades of thinking that have gone into it, and will outline below a few of its many signal contributions to the rather important questions of how one must devise and manage national power in an increasingly complex world.

First, the author is quite clear on the point that technology does not a revolution make-nor can technology dominate a national strategy. If anything-and he cites Luttwak, among others, with great regard-an excessive emphasis on technology will be very expensive, susceptible to asymmetric attack, and subversive of other elements of the national strategy that must be managed in harmony. People matter most.

Second, and this is the point that hit me hardest, it is clear that security strategy requires a holistic approach and the rather renaissance capability of managing a multiplicity of capabilities-diplomatic, economic, cultural, military, psychological, information-in a balanced manner and under the over-arching umbrella of a strategy.

Third, and consistent with the second, "war proper" is not exclusively about force of arms, but rather about achieving the national political objective by imposing one's will on another. Those that would skew their net assessments and force structure capabilities toward "real war" writ in their conventional terms are demeaning Clausewitz rather than honoring him.

Fourth, as I contemplate in this and other readings how best to achieve lasting peace and prosperity, I see implicit in all that the author puts forward, but especially in a quote from Donald Kegan, the raw fact that it is not enough for America to have a preponderance of the traditional military and economic power in the world-we must also accept the burden and responsibility of preserving the peace and responding to the complex emergencies around the globe that must inevitably undermine our stability and prosperity at home.

Fifth, it is noteworthy that of all the dimensions of strategy that are brought forward, one-time-is unique for being unimprovable. Use it or lose it. Time is a strategic dimension too little understood and consequently too little valued by Americans in particular and the Western alliance in general.

Sixth, it merits comment that the author, perhaps the greatest authority on Clausewitz in this era, clarifies the fact that the "trinity" is less about people, government, and an army, than about primordial violence, hatred, and enmity (the people); chance and probability on the battlefield, most akin to a game of cards (the army); and instrumental rationality (the government)-and that these are not fixed isolated elements, but interpenetrate one another and interact in changing ways over time and space.

Seventh, the author devotes an entire chapter to "Strategic Culture as Context" and this is most helpful, particularly in so far as it brings forward the weakness of the American strategic culture, notably a pre-disposition to isolationism and to technical solutions in the abstract. Perhaps more importantly, a good strategic culture with inferior weapons can defeat a weak strategic culture with an abundance of technology and economic power.

Eighth, and finally, the author courageously takes on the issue of small wars and other savage violence, seeking to demonstrate that grand strategy applies equally well to the savage criminal and warlord parasites that Ralph Peters has noted are not susceptible to our traditional legal and military conventions. While he does not succeed (and notes in passing that Clausewitz's own largest weakness was a failure to catalogue the enemy and the dialog with the enemy as a major factor in strategic success and failure), the coverage is acceptable in making three key points:

1) small wars and sub-national conflicts are generally not resolved decisively at the irregular level-conventional forces are required at some point;

2) special operations forces have a role to play but lack a strategic context (that is to say, current political and military leaders have no appreciation for the strategic value of special operations forces); and

3) small wars and non-traditional threats-asymmetrical threats-must be taken seriously and co-equally with symmetrical regular conflicts.

At the end of the day, this erudite scholar finds common cause with gutter warrior Ralph Peters and gang-warfare iconoclast Martin Van Crevald by concluding his book with a quote from Alexander Solzhenitsyn: "In the Computer Age we will live by the law of the Stone Age: the man with the bigger club is right. But we pretend this isn't so. We don't notice or even suspect it-why surely our morality progresses together with our civilization."

Stunning account of war and strategy
By William Podmore
This is an outstanding contribution to strategic studies, a comprehensive placing of virtually all theorists and historians of war and strategy, and hugely thought-provoking. Yet Gray never forgets that practice is primary, noting the `authority of practice over theory'.
He uses Clausewitz's method, defining strategy as `the use that is made of force and the threat of force for the ends of policy': it is about objectives, effects. The nature and function of strategy and war are unchanging, though their characters change constantly. "Every war is both unique yet also similar to other wars." Strategy is in every conflict everywhere.
Tactics, by contrast, is the use of instruments of power in action. Strategy proposes; tactics dispose. "War is not `about' economics, morality, or fighting. Instead, it is about politics."
Strategy's dimension are politics, ethics, military preparations, people, technology, time, war proper. Technological changes alter the character not the nature of war: "Technology is important, but in war and strategy people matter most."
Gray analyses strategy's components, its various environments, land, sea, air, space, and cyberspace. Seapower, airpower and spacepower function strategically as enabling factors: a war's outcome may be decided by action at sea, in the air or in space, but all conflicts have to be finally resolved on land, where people are.

He illuminates wars from the Punic to the Boer, but focuses mainly on the 20th century's excessive amount of war experience: wars between empires, still all too possible, and wars against nations, opposed by wars for national liberation and independence. He writes, "how truly heroic is Mao's message of eventual success through the conduct of protracted revolutionary warfare." Success can mean just stopping the enemy from winning.
We can check the quality of his approach by assessing the strategic conclusions it generates, despite his overmuch reliance on histories emanating from State Department and Foreign Office. He shows that bombing Germany before defeating the Luftwaffe was a costly error. He proves that the atomic bomb did not defeat Japan in 1945; Japan was already defeated. He praises the Soviet Union's prudent and successful practice of nuclear deterrence.

Without risking life or limb, readers can explore the wonders and beauty of the Amazon in this Where Is...? title.

Human beings have inhabited the banks of the Amazon River since 13,000 BC and yet they make up just a small percentage of the "population" of this geographic wonderland. The Amazon River basin teems with life—animal and plant alike. It's a rainforest that is home to an estimated 390 billion individual trees, 2.5 million species of insects, and hundreds of amazing creatures and plants that can either cure diseases, or, like the poison dart frog, kill with a single touch. Where Is the Amazon? reveals the amazing scale of a single rainforest that we are still trying to understand today and that, in many ways, supports our existence on this planet.

The Snowflake : A Water Cycle Story, by Neil Waldman

"A beautiful take on the water cycle. Waldman traces the journey of a single drop of water throughout the year, with each month receiving its own spread. The water begins as a snowflake that melts into a droplet, flows into the ground, bubbles up in a spring, flows into a farm's irrigation system, evaporates into the morning fog, becomes part of a cloud, rains down, enters a plumbing system, washes a little girl's face, flows out to the ocean, gets swept onto the shore and evaporates into the sky to become a snowflake once more. The clear text is undeniably lyrical: "It flowed past fields of waving sea grasses, over corals of many colors, and into the mouths of great striped fish." The real stunners here, though, are the dazzling, cool-tones paintings that convey the wonders of nature with delicate precision. A must for libraries and science classrooms." School Library Journal

K-Gr. 2. This beautifully illustrated picture book follows a single droplet of water as it moves and changes throughout one year. With a double-page spread for each month, the story traces the droplet's journey from snowflake to mountain pond to underground stream to river to irrigation system to cloud to reservoir to city water system to bathroom sink to drain pipe to cloud and back to snowflake. A few sentences of text on each spread comment on the droplet's form, travels, and surroundings. More effective and memorable, though, are the subtle hues and varied compositions of Waldman's paintings in this unusually handsome presentation of the water cycle. Carolyn Phelan

One snowflake's path around the world
By Corinne H. Smith
The complex topic of hydrology is simplified here so that children (and adults) can easily understand it. In calendar style, we follow the path of one particular snowflake falling on a mountain. Over the course of twelve months, it becomes a droplet of water that melts into a stream, passes through an agricultural irrigation system, lifts up into a summer fog, drops into a reservoir, flows through city water pipes, drifts in the ocean, rises into a cloud and once again becomes a snowflake falling on a mountain. We come full circle and can start the story all over again from the beginning of the book.

Neil Waldman's paintings brightly convey the realistic journey and are colorful, clean and beautiful to boot. "The Snowflake" is a nice addition to elementary school and nature center shelves, as well as a good read-aloud storytime selection that will prove thought-provoking to the young.

Great concept. Story a bit bland.
By Budgiegirl
I really liked the concept of following a snowflake (turned droplet) around the water cycle. However - I found the reading a bit dry. The story is presented as a month by month snippet , i.e. January, then February, and so forth. I felt like the story could have been spruced up a bit - maybe by giving the snowflake a bit more of a "persona" to make it fun for young readers. I also thought it could have gone into more of an explanation about what was happening, rather than just saying "it evaporated." I don't think my kids will be requesting to hear this one again and again. Incidentally, I am a very science-y person and it would not have taken much to interest me about the water cycle... so in sum: Nice concept. Boring reading.

Great Non- Fiction for Children!
By D. C. Brashear Taylor
I am a first grade teacher in a district that has adopted the Common Core Standards- which means that there is a push for the use of more non-fiction texts in classroom instruction. So this past school year, during our unit on making inferences, I decided to find a non-fiction text to introduce the concept instead of the fiction I have used for the same purpose in previous years. I figured I could kill two birds with one stone- science and reading in one!
This book is an amazing non-fiction text to teach inferring (especially making inferences to determine word meanings) and many other reading and science concepts. It basically follows a snowflake through the seasons, discussing how the snowflake changes with the seasons and weather. (i.e- from a snowflake in January to a water droplet in February-then briefly refreezing, becoming a water droplet again, becoming ground water, evaporating, becoming rain, etc.) The text is written in a way that is easy for younger students to understand, but peppered with vocabulary to challenge them to infer meaning through the use of context clues. The illustrations are wonderful and engaging as well, offering supporting context clues for students that are visual learners.
My students loved this book and often asked to "check it out" of our classroom library during independent reading time.
I recommend this book to parents, teachers, or anyone that just enjoys great children's non-fiction! I will use this book again with our inferring unit this year.

The Devil Made Me Do It, by Georgina Spelvin

In 1973, short on cash and with the rent due, a Peacenik former Broadway Gypsy living in Manhattan's Meat Packing District signed on to cook for the cast and crew of a new film, The Devil in Miss Jones. She soon found herself cast in the lead role, and her legendary erotic performance launched her on a career that would come to define the era of Porn Chic. This is the story of Georgina Spelvin, a poignant and wholly bawdy memoir of her life before and after porn fame, full of riveting anecdotes and marvelous gossip from time spent among the famous and the infamous. With a storyteller's touch, Georgina takes us to the bright lights of Broadway, the glamour of Manhattan's Latin Quarter, the fervor of the Vietnam Era peace movement, and of course, the so-called Golden Age of Porn. Thirty years in the making and five years in the writing, there are more laughs than tears, but no apologies or excuses. It is not a victim's whine, but a romping good read, filled with the colorful details of a road less traveled.

I love Georgina and her fantastic new book.
By Annie Sprinkle
"The Devil..." is heavenly! I'm so thrilled to finally get to read about the life of this amazing, wonderful, sex Goddess and performer. She inspired me greatly, and changed my life forever for the better when I saw her for the first time in the Devil and Miss Jones. Georgina Spelvin has always been in a class by herself, and her book reflects that, because it is too. She generously gives readers a great feel (pun intended) for the Golden Age of porn, and what life and sexuality was like in the 60's/70's for the sexually liberated and talented. This book is also very relevant for today's world. I've read and enjoyed many sex worker autobiographies, and this is certainly one of the best--and perhaps the most sincere and from the heart of them all. Well written too!
Annie Sprinkle, Ph.D.--Huge Georgina Spelvin admirer. Porn star turned artist/sexologist.

The Classiest Porn Star Writes a Really Great Book
By Jim Morris
This book is a lot of things. It's got a lot of slithery explicit salivating sex in it. It's a sixties book. It's got more good info about how movies are made than most movie books. It's a deep and dark tale of addiction and recovery. And it's a warm family story. Swear to God!
The story of how Georgina got to be a porn star in the first place is really funny. She applied to cater The Devil In Miss Jones, and was asked to do a line reading with one of the men who was auditioning. He wasn't hired, but she was, to star in it. She also did the catering. That's maybe the only time the star of a movie that did this well also did the cooking and washed the dishes. It was a friendly set. The director dried.
Having already dropped out of corporate America and become part of a hippie film commune, Georgina ploughed her money into making socially and politically conscious films. She got slippery for the revolution. How did a nice girl ... you know. Remember it was the `60s. Everybody decided the old values weren't working, dropped back to zero, and tried everything.
I'm glad the stuff I tried wasn't filmed.
The book is fabulous. I've published seven books as an author and edited more than 200. This is one of the best. Really. I can't imagine anyone who is not a Bishop reading it and not having a good time. Hell, the best character in it is Georgina's mother. It's that good.

What a fun book to read!!
By F. Comstock
Georgina Spelvin writes with a dry wit and humor. She writes as though she's talking to you personally and telling you a really funny and shocking story. Her writing style reminds me of a cross between Mark Twain and D. H. Lawrence (Lady Chatterley's Lover). It's like the down home humor of back fence gossip and cracker barrel stories delivered with a naughty flavor.

When she writes about her sexual escapades, she does so with straightforward honesty and humor that is racy, sensual and erotic without being phony, vulgar or fake. The way she includes her thoughts in various situations, like a written stage whisper, is a real hoot!

And when she talks about the times that are less than rosy, even downright ugly, she does it without pulling any punches, and without looking for pity, thank you so very much! Yet, even then she finds some humor such that you smile as you grimace (that's not easy, let me tell you!)

I have no literary credentials, but I love to read. I loved this book, and I think you will too!

From the Inside Flap
Preface

The problem of estimating the values of a random (or stochastic) process given observations of a related random process is encountered in many areas of science and engineering, e.g., communications, control, signal processing, geophysics, econometrics, and statistics. Although the topic has a rich history, and its formative stages can be attributed to illustrious investigators such as Laplace, Gauss, Legendre, and others, the current high interest in such problems began with the work of H. Wold, A. N. Kolmogorov, and N. Wiener in the late 1930s and early 1940s. N. Wiener in particular stressed the importance of modeling not just "noise" but also "signals" as random processes. His thought-provoking originally classified 1942 report, released for open publication in 1949 and now available in paperback form under the title Time Series Analysis, is still very worthwhile background reading.

As with all deep subjects, the extensions of these results have been very far-reaching as well. A particularly important development arose from the incorporation into the theory of multichannel state-space models. Though there were various earlier partial intimations and explorations, especially in the work of R. L. Stratonovich- in the former Soviet Union, the chief credit for the explosion of activity in this direction goes to R. E. Kalman, who also made important related contributions to linear systems, optimal control, passive systems, stability theory, and network synthesis.

In fact, least-squares estimation is one of those happy subjects that is interesting not only in the richness and scope of its results, but also because of its mutually beneficial connections with a host of other (often apparently very different) subjects. Thus, beyond those already named, we may mention connections with radiative transfer and scattering theory, linear algebra, matrix and operator theory, orthogonal polynomials, moment problems, inverse scattering problems, interpolation theory, decoding of Reed-Solomon and BCH codes, polynomial factorization and root distribution problems, digital filtering, spectral analysis, signal detection, martingale theory, the so-called Hh theories of estimation and control, least-squares and adaptive filtering problems, and many others. We can surely apply to it the lines written by William Shakespeare about another (beautiful) subject:

"Age does not wither her, nor custom stale,
Her infinite variety."

Though we were originally tempted to cover a wider range, many reasons have led us to focus this volume largely on estimation problems for finite-dimensional linear systems with state-space models, covering most aspects of an area now generally known as Wiener and Kalman filtering theory. Three distinctive features of our treatment are the pervasive use of a geometric point of view, the emphasis on the numerically favored square-root/array forms of many algorithms, and the emphasis on equivalence and duality concepts for the solution of several related problems in adaptive filtering, estimation, and control. These features are generally absent in most prior treatments, ostensibly on the grounds that they are too abstract and complicated. It is our hope that these misconceptions will be dispelled by the presentation herein, and that the fundamental simplicity and power of these ideas will be more widely recognized arid exploited.

The material presented in this book can be broadly categorized into the following topics:

Introduction and Foundations
Chapter 1: Overview
Chapter 2: Deterministic Least-Squares Problems
Chapter 3: Stochastic Least-Squares Problems
Chapter 4: The Innovations Process
Chapter 5: State-Space Models

Estimation of Stationary Processes
Chapter 6: Innovations for Stationary Processes
Chapter 7: Wiener Theory for Scalar Processes
Chapter 8: Recursive Wiener Filters

Estimation of Nonstationary Processes
Chapter 9: The Kalman Filter
Chapter 10: Smoothed Estimators

Fast and Array Algorithms
Chapter 11: Fast Algorithms
Chapter 12: Array Algorithms
Chapter 13: Fast Array Algorithms

Continuous-Time Estimation
Chapter 16: Continuous-Time State-Space Estimation

Advanced Topics
Chapter 14: Asymptotic Behavior
Chapter 15: Duality and Equivalence in Estimation and Control
Chapter 17: A Scattering Theory Approach

Being intended for a graduate-level course, the book assumes familiarity with basic concepts from matrix theory, linear algebra, linear system theory, and random processes. Four appendices at the end of the book provide the reader with background material in all these areas.

There is ample material in this book for the instructor to fashion a course to his or her needs and tastes. The authors have used portions of this book as the basis for one-quarter first-year graduate level courses at Stanford University, the University of California at Los Angeles, and the University of California at Santa Barbara; the students were expected to have had some exposure to discrete-time and state-space theory. A typical course would start with Secs.1.1-1.2 as an overview (perhaps omitting the matrix derivations), with the rest of Ch. 1 left for a quick reading (and re-reading from time to time), most of Chs. 2 and 3 (focusing on the geometric approach) on the basic deterministic and stochastic least-squares problems, Ch. 4 on the innovations process, Secs. 6.4-6.5 and 7.3-7.7 on scalar Wiener filtering, Secs. 9.1-9.3, 9.5, and 9.7 on Kalman filtering, Secs. 10.1-10.2 as an introduction to smoothing, Secs. 12.1-12.5 and 13.1-13.4 on array algorithms, and Secs. 16.1-16.4 and 16.6 on continuous-time problems.

More advanced students and researchers would pursue selections of material from Sec. 2.8, Chs. 8, 11, 14, 15, and 17, and Apps. E and R These cover, among other topics, least-squares problems with uncertain data, the problem of canonical spectral factorization, convergence of the Kalman filter, the algebraic Riccati equation, duality, backwards-time and complementary models, scattering, etc. Those wishing to go on to the more recent H¥ theory can find a treatment closely related to the philosophy of the current book (cf. Sec. 1.6) in the research monograph of Hassibi, Sayed, and Kailath (1999).

A feature of the book is a collection of nearly 300 problems, several of which complement the text and present additional results and insights. However, there is little discussion of real applications or of the error and sensitivity analyses required for them. The main issue in applications is constructing an appropriate model, or actually a set of models, which are further analyzed and then refined by using the results and algorithms presented in this book. Developing good models and analyzing them effectively requires not only a good appreciation of the actual application, but also a good understanding of the theory, at both an analytical and intuitive level. It is the latter that we have tried to achieve here; examples of successful applications have to be sought in the literature, and some references are provided to this end.

Merched, and our young friend Amir Ghazanfarian (in memoriam) from whom we had so much more to learn.

We are of course also deeply indebted to the many researchers and authors in this beautiful field. Partial acknowledgment is evident through the citations and references; while the list of the latter is quite long, we apologize for omissions and inadequacies arising from the limitations of our knowledge and our energy. Nevertheless, we would be remiss not to explicitly mention the inspiration and pleasure we have gained in studying the papers and books of N. Wiener, R. E. Kalman, and P Whittle.

Major support for the many years of research that led to this book was provided by the Mathematics Divisions of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and the Army Research Office, by the Joint Services Electronics Program, by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and by the National Science Foundation. Finally, we would like to thank Bernard Goodwin and Tom Robbins, as well as the staff of Prentice Hall, for their patience and other contributions to this project.

Linear Estimation from A to Z.
By Jeffrey Andrews
Kailath, Sayed, and Hassibi do an excellent job of explaining what is a fairly complicated subject. This book is best-suited for scholars who desire a deep understanding of estimation theory. Engineers who want to quickly understand how to implement a Kalman Filter might be better off buying Adaptive Filter Theory by Simon Haykin.
The first chapter provides a good overview of the book, although it makes the most sense once the subject matter of the rest of the book has been digested a bit. A consistent framework emphasizing innovations (or the new information which appears at any iteration) is used throughout the book, and both continuous and discrete-time techniques for stochastic estimation are given nearly equal treatment, although the real-world engineer is likely to be interested in the latter.
Professor Kailath's articulate nature and knack for the clever anecdote or one-liner shines throughout the book, making it, while very mathematical in nature, quite readable for the motivated student.

Wonderful and insightful
By Nicolas Chapados
This is one of the best engineering textbooks I have read, period. Although the subject matter is not for the faint-hearted, the authors' attention to pedagogical details shine throughout (repetition is the key to learning). The Kalman filter is introduced naturally as a consequence of a general framework for obtaining the best linear estimator of a random variable given others (earlier observations), and the geometric intuition is stressed repeatedly.
No important issue is omitted, including a very complete treatment of numerical issues and fast algorithms. My only gripe is with the assumption that all model parameters are KNOWN; in other words, the important aspect system identification (parameter estimation, learning, or whatever you call it in your field) is left to other textbooks.
Moreover, and no minor accomplishment, is the amazingly small number of typographical errors (at least up to where I have read so far; a bit over half the book), which is remarkable given the dense mathematical contents.
All in all, I would give it 6 stars if possible. Everything is there: it transmits a deep intuition for the matter, a places it in its historical context through interesting and amusing notes; it leaves the reader fulfilled but not overwhelmed.

Excellent text
By Shadow
This is an excellent text that covers estimation theory from a modern point of view. It will be especially interesting to anyone with a graduate degree in physics because Kailath, et al derive the theory of linear estimation from a point of view very similar to that of modern quantum mechanics - they even use similar bra/ket notation!

Basic and advanced statistical mathematics is somewhat an implied prerequisite for understanding this text. From what I have seen, I honestly find nothing negative to critique - its probably one of the best technical textbooks I have in my large library.

A Great and Often Strange Spiritual Adventure with Lewis - and an Intriguing Choice for Groups
By David Crumm
I'm a compulsive C.S. Lewis collector and, if you're even thinking about buying this book - I'll bet it's not the first volume of Lewis that you'll place upon your shelf, either. His life was so complex, his imagination so expansive and his faith so deep that I find myself drawn toward his often strange and ultimately triumphant life over and over again. I've collected virtually all of his books and nearly all of the main titles written about him over the years. I even own the big 3-volume collection of his letters.

So, why buy this new book if your "Lewis shelf" looks even a little bit like the overflowing Lewis section in my library?

I think there are a couple of reasons that this book is a great new offering: First, most of us are hesitant to purchase, let alone slog all the way through, the big 3-volume set. I'll admit that, while my set of the letters has some turned-down corners here and there - I haven't waded through those volumes cover to cover to cover to ... Well, you get the point.

Second, we love reading letters, don't we? Letters are foundational in the world's great religions. Our revelations come to us, quite often, in the form of epistles. The New Testament books are mostly letters. As a journalist and editor myself for more than 30 years, I've written thousands of letters (now Emails and posted epistles) and I've received, edited and published thousands of readers' letters. I can tell you this - there are few books with the impact of a well-written, well-timed letter.

And, third, Paul F. Ford has pulled into these nearly 400 pages a most intriguing, sometimes troubling and always fascinating thematic collection of "Jack" Lewis' letters concerning "spiritual direction." In a very brief introduction, Ford outlines his choices as falling into three categories: "spiritual companionship" (letters to friends on spiritual matters), "spiritual discipleship" (letters Lewis wrote seeking advice) and "spiritual direction" (letters in which Lewis gave advice).

Ford turns this book into a great choice for seasonal reading - forming a kind of pathway of letter-shaped stepping stones out of Lewis' expansive and, quite often, very messy life. Ford is handing us a book that small groups, including Sunday-morning classes, could divide into chunks for at least a two-month study of Lewis and the spiritual legacy of such letters.

Curiously, HarperOne gives Ford precious little space in this book - or perhaps Ford chose not to step too prominently into the path of readers who are eager to encounter Lewis, rather than the editor. Nevertheless, it's important, especially if you're thinking about buying this book, to realize that you're in the hands of widely acknowledged Lewis scholar.

Ford has feet firmly planted both in Catholic and Protestant worlds. He likes to point out that he was the first Roman Catholic in the doctoral program at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena - and he now is a professor of theology and liturgy at St. John Seminary in Camarillo, California. In his spare time, he rolls out Lewis books that I - among thousands of others - keep picking up and enjoying.

He's the creator of one of my own most-thumbed Lewis volumes, the thick little paperback, "Companion to Narnia." I also recommend that book - if you're jumping into that delightful fantasy realm along with millions of other Americans in this era of Narnian revival.

The important point here is that whatever your religious orientation may be as you think about Lewis - and think about this book and its themes - you're in firm hands here whether you're a newly minted evangelical, a curious mainliner or an active Catholic hoping to stir up your parish's adult education program.

Finally, let me point out a couple of personal "favorites" within this new collection.

I love the final section of the book. It's quite well known now among Lewis fans that he died on the same day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated half a world away. JFK's passing completely eclipsed Lewis' passing in global media. And, oddly enough, reading these letters that Ford has excerpted for us -- notes scattered throughout the months of Lewis' demise - I suspect that Lewis himself wouldn't have cared an iota that his death dropped from the front pages. Oh, Lewis loved the media limelight. But, for Lewis, at the actual point of his death -- his own story already had unfolded. His final letters clearly make the case that he had enjoyed the great adventures of his life and settled matters peaceably as he approached these final days.

There's a 1963 letter to a friend here in which he writes that preparation for death "means stripping off that body which is tormenting you: like taking off a hair-shirt or getting out of a dungeon. What is there to be afraid of?" Amazing. Death as "getting out of a dungeon," penned by a dying master of dungeon lore.

And, then, leaping back into the middle of the book: Some of this may be a revelation to you if you haven't read many contemporary spiritual memoirs (and I'm thinking here of the writings left behind by saints such as Dorothy Day). But, in the heart of the book, you'll find that Lewis' amazing life wasn't constructed as one continuous cruise through mystic inspiration. Quite the contrary! Real saints like Lewis, Day and others admit that spiritual life is full of fumbles, dead ends and silences.
I especially recommend a letter penned in 1948 in which Lewis begins by advising his friend: "I very much doubt if I'm good enough at prayer myself to advise others." And then, as he begins to offer his thoughts, friend to friend, he writes like this: "Of course it is very difficult to keep God only before one for more than a few seconds. Our minds are in ruins before we bring them to Him and the rebuilding is gradual."

This is a hefty little book at nearly 400 pages and perhaps not a typical choice for small groups - but I would urge you not to miss this great and often strange spiritual adventure with our old friend, Jack.

Spiritual Direction from C.S. Lewis
By Trevin Wax
There are three major volumes of C.S. Lewis' letters now available. Virtually every surviving letter from Lewis is now contained in these three massive books.

If you are like me, you wonder how to sort through so many letters in order to find the advice from Lewis that has spiritual value. There's no reason to wonder anymore. Yours, Jack: Spiritual Direction from C.S. Lewis
is a collection of the best of Lewis' letters from all three collections. In this volume, one finds the letters containing "spiritual direction" from Lewis.

I thoroughly enjoyed Yours, Jack. The editors did a good job of selecting which letters to include in this collection. And they helpfully include a summary of each and an index that makes the letters more accessible to readers looking up a certain topic.

There are some gems here. Let me give you a few worthwhile quotes:

"The trouble about God is that he is like a person who never acknowledge's one's letters and so, in time, one comes to the conclusion either that he does not exist or that you have got the address wrong." (1921)

"One needs the sweetness to start one on the spiritual life but, once started, one must learn to obey God for his own sake, not for the pleasure." (1931)

"(Sensual love) ceases to be a devil when it ceases to be a god. So many things - nay every real thing - is good if only it will be humble and ordinate." (1940)

"I know all about the despair of overcoming chronic temptations. It is not serious provided self-offended petulance, annoyance at breaking records, impatience et cetera doesn't get the upper hand. No amount of falls will really undo us if we keep on picking ourselves up each time. We shall of course be very muddy and tattered children by the time we reach home. But the bathrooms are all ready, the towels put out, and the clean clothes are in the airing cupboard. The only fatal thing is to lose one's temper and give it up. It is when we notice the dirt that God is most present to us: it is the very sign of his presence." (1942)

"The great thing, if one can, is to stop regarding all the unpleasant things as interruptions of one's `own', or `real' life. The truth is of course that what one calls the interruptions are precisely one's real life - the life God is sending one day by day: what one calls one's `real life' is a phantom of one's own imagination." (1943)

"The doctrine of Christ's divinity seems to me not something stuck on which you can unstick but something that peeps out at every point so that you'd have to unravel the whole web to get rid of it." (1944)

"When first things are put first, second things are not suppressed but increased." (1952)

"You ask `for what' God wants you. Isn't the primary answer that he wants you?" (1954)

"The wrath of God: 'something in God of which the best image in the created world is righteous indignation.' I think it quite a mistake to try to soften the idea of anger by substituting something like disapproval or regret. Even with men real anger is far more likely than cold disapproval to lead to full reconciliation. Hot love, hot wrath...." (1963)

These are just a few of my favorite quotes from C.S. Lewis' letters. Yours, Jack offers an inside look into Lewis' correspondence. Readers will benefit from the counsel found in these pages.
