Very happy I never have to look at this torture device ever again in my life.

This book made my life a living hell for 10 weeks. The format is very confusing with the authors showing you the wrong way to go about learning a concept AND THEN telling you the the correct way. Chemistry is hard enough, and this book just makes it worse! It also didn't help that my professor relied on it to teach about 75% of the material. Ugh, hardest "A" I ever earned!

Oh, and the first copy Amazon sent me had the right cover but the inside was a Russian workbook! WTF? How does that happen?!?! Luckily they overnighted a replacement no questions asked.

A horrible approach to teaching

A horrible approach to teaching. Guided inquiry method would work if you have someone who is knows the subject well enough to guide you; otherwise it is more like lost child wandering about in a huge, dark forest hoping to find a bug to eat because they are starving and cold. Unfortunately, the instructors are told not to help and to allow the students to figure it out on their own...The .05% this method might work for probably know the subject backwards and forwards by the time they figure it all out. The rest are just out of luck.

wrong approach to chem

The way they present this is the wrong way to teach chemistry. I get what they're trying to do--get you to think critically about a topic before explaining it to you, but in the end a lot of it just ended up being confusing. Especially since I did this book as a 7 week class, there was no time to sit and learn all the wrong ways, jut teach me the right way and then ask me critical thinking questions about it. This book needs serious revision. Luckily, I had other resources to learn my Chem and I still pulled an A in the class.

I am currently enrolled in a upper level college course on Russia since Peter the Great. We have read chapters from books like: "Natasha's Dance", "Rediscovering the Romanovs", "Catherine the Great", etc. As an optional book I choose "The three Empresses: Catherine I, Anne, & Elizabeth of Russia." After reading exerts from each of these books I can safely say, "The three Empresses... is not only easy to read but it also puts the focus on the day-to-day lives of these women."
It's written with an emotional undertone that allows the reader to empathise with what each of these ladies was going through. It's not all facts and figures the way many historical accounts tend to be, but rather a remarkable account of each one's life from birth to death. Who they loved, what they endured, and what made each strong enough to rule their country with grace.
It also includes the pitfalls of each reign in order to provide an unbias account of these rulers. I would recommend this book to those interested in Russia's Imperial past. Especially those interested in some truly remarkable women!

Personalities and social histories

This book examines the personalities and careers of Catherine I, Anne, and Elizabeth whose reigns spanned the interval between the death of Peter I and the ascendancy of Catherine II.
It depicts how each of these weak empresses gave in to the corruption of her ministers and luxurious living while neglecting affairs of state. There's little hint of the reversal to come under Catherine II. It's a social history rather than a history of the times, contrasting the sumptuous living of the aristocratic oligarchy with the excessively poor conditions of the Russian peasantry. Wars with Sweden, Turkey and Prussia are very lightly touched, giving the impression that the Russians were simply lucky to win and survive. There's no speculation on why Russia succeeded in maintaining autocracy longer than other European nations. Longworth makes no comparisons to the political collective oligarchies in the modern Russia and USA.

The book serves as a prelude to Philip Massie's more extensive histories "Catherine the Great" and "The Romanovs." Political history, at least, is better covered by Massie.

Miserable little book. Sorry I bought it.

Mr. Longforth writes three short biographies of Russian empresses Catherine I, Anne, and Elizabeth by using a sketchy skeletal history of the times and then telling the stories of these women filling in the blanks with imaginative details relating to their feelings and motives, none of which is documented. His handling of the subjects is colored throughout by a dismissive somewhat misogynistic attitude. Really distasteful...
