Ready to use CookBook

To my best knowledge, the well-written book gives for the first time a comprehensive treatment of spice and switched-mode power supplies (SMPS's). A short history of modelling techniques is discussed with references to relevant literature; also some tricks to speed up a simulation are given. The main part of the book consists of the small-signal (averaged) and transient models for the most common converters, such as buck, boost, flyback, forward, half-bridge, etc.; all illustrated by examples. Most of the examples are available in electronic format on the accompanying CD-ROM; the reader can start quite quickly with experimenting with the templates. Unfortunately, extracting the models from IsSpice (which we use) is quite cumbersome, since first the demo version has to be installed before the models are available. This demo version conflicts with the commercial version (although Intusoft gives a solution on their web-site). In a next release it would be very helpful to distribute the models separately on the CD (or web?). Nevertheless, the book is according to my opinion very useful for people working in the field of SMPS's. Calculating the closed-loop response and stability analysis is now really easy. Comprehensive, easy to read. Good work.

Not for Beginners

I can understand why many people who bought this book thinking that it would be usefull for learning how to use SPICE or learning how to design power supplies were dissappointed. Basso is definitely not for beginners. The book assumes you have a fundamental knowledge of SPICE and electronics. He provides a generous list of papers and books which the beginner can use to come up to speed on the various complex principals of power supply design.

If you are a working professional in power electronics, buy this book. Basso gives away a lot of very accurate cookbook designs that can be easily "tweaked" to fit any design requirement. The circuits provided in this book made it very easy for me to make a complete working SPICE model of my design in just a few hours.

Learn the fundamentals about power electronics and SPICE, then buy this book.

SPICE Cookbook that really cooks

This is a complete Power Supply Designers Toolkit/cookbook with ready to run simulation templates for optimun solutions to loop stabilization. There is just enought backgrown information for understanding the models derivation. The attached CD-ROM contains all the models necessary for fast solutions. I particually liked the spreadsheet for solving loop components values using K Factor analysis. I don't know how many times in the last 20 years that I could have used this solver. The real power of this book is access to the author thru his web site. I just e-mailed him my faulty file and he quickly told me how to fix my mistakes. It's like having an expert on call. The author does a nice job of tying in other well known experts in the field and using their expertise to make this book a complete study in the art of Power Supply loop design.

Dr. Kopec uses a unique method which he calls “Mastery Lessons” to guide the learner towards pawn structures and piece configurations which have been demonstrated to lead to success in certain Sicilian variations. This approach, developing “heuristic packets”, helped to achieve master level play in his work with computer chess programs.

About the Author
Daniel Kopec (1954-2016) was an American chess International Master, author, and computer science professor at Brooklyn College. He graduated from Dartmouth College in the class of 1975. Kopec later received a PhD in Machine Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh. With Ivan Bratko he was the creator of the Bratko-Kopec Test, which was one of the de facto standard testing systems for chess playing computer programs in the 1980s. Kopec was one of the most talented home-bred players in the US. Dr. Kopec was New York High School Champion at 14, National Master at 17, Scottish Champion in 1980, 2nd-equal in the Canadian Closed in 1984, and International Master in 1985. He was an active player, journalist, writer, chess educator and scholar. His competitive results with top-flight chess professionals were remarkable. He delivered many chess courses, lectures, published seven highly recognized chess books, and developed eight highly regarded instructional videos (18.5 hours). Over the past 16 years Kopec’s Chess Camp, had become world renowned. In parallel with his chess career, Dr. Kopec had pursued an academic career in computer science with research in artificial intelligence, software methodology, and computer science education. For more than 20 years Kopec tested and evaluated hundreds of human and machine chess players in the UK, Canada, and US in order to quantify their overall chess strength, their specific deficiencies and definite abilities. In bridging his chess and academic interests, Kopec developed a reputation as perhaps the world’s greatest exponent of chess knowledge.

A truly outstanding book. Rather than providing another boring encyclopedia of every game ever played with this opening, Dr. Kopec explains the principles underlying multiple variations of the Sicilian Defense, from the point of view of the Black pieces. His teaching skills are evident, as he discusses pawn structures, and positional and attacking strategies. The illustrative games are instructive and entertaining, spanning the 1800s to the present. I recommend this book for players of any strength.

"THIS BOOK IS INTENDED FOR THE PLAYER WHO WISHES TO DEVELOP A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF THE MOST IMPORTANT SYSTEMS IN THE SICILIAN DEFENSE. It is NOT a book that attempts to cover ALL lines or variations---OR EVEN THE MOST CURRENT ONES. MY GOAL has been to show the MAIN FORMATION (patterns) AND THEMES , which can arise in DIFFERENT Sicilian variations. The book is written DISTINCTLY FROM BLACK'S POINT OF VIEW AND DESIGNED to provide an inherently SOUND and VIABLE opening repetoire. PAWN STRUCTURES , typically arising from these systems, will be presented and discussed...." says the AUTHOR, IM Dr. Danny Kopec.

THIS BOOK IS RE-PRINTED FROM (2001) and STILL useful today. This 217 page book covers most Open, OFF-BEAT and Closed Sicilian Defense PAWN STRUCTURES alive today, but there are SSOOOOO many to choose from, it may be short by most standards. I believe this work could have more of a point with modern game data (2001-11) but the modeled games STILL have poignancy. This is an optimal approach to studying this defense and developing your OWN preferred SD system and playing style. The author gives/summarizes the key points of each discussed Sicilian system with recommendations. I recommend this book for chess players still trying to tread through the fathoms of the Sicilian, strong or intermediate/beginner. Now you have a life-boat filled with rations....avoid the sharks and find land! NUFF SAID........

About the Author
James Trefil is the Clarence J. Robinson Professor of Physics at George Mason University. He has made contributions to research in elementary particle physics, fluid mechanics, medical physics (including cancer research), and the earth sciences and has written extensively about science for the general audience. He has recently completed a term as General Councilor of the American Physical Society and was awarded the prestigious Gemant Prize of the American Institute of Physics for his efforts to present science to the general public.

Robert M. Hazen is the Clarence J. Robinson Professor of Earth Science at George Mason University and Staff Scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington Geophysical Laboratory. He performs research on materials at high pressure and is studying the hypothesis that life arose in a deep, high-pressure environment. He is the author of more than 230 articles and 16 books on science, history, and music. A Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he has received numerous awards for his science writing.

Very good conceptual textbook, but lacks the mathematical aspects of Physics

As a means of introducing concepts and applications of Physics, this textbook is spot on. However, in an attempt to "keep the textbook focused on practical everyday uses of Physics," there is a significant lack of calculations. While it does give some basic equations for each chapter, they are typically straight forward and general, and only encompasses a select few of the equations that a student would use in a Physics class. One looking for a more intensive textbook (for AP course, ect.) would be better off with a text such as Physics by Giancoli.

My professor told us that this books is going out of print, which is a shame, cause it's a great textbook: it's easy to read, it's understandable, all the while being scientific.

MICHAEL G. McMILLAN, CFA, is Director of Ethics and Professional Standards in the Education Division of CFA Institute. Dr. McMillan joined CFA Institute in 2008 after more than a decade as a professor of accounting and finance at Johns Hopkins University's Carey School of Business and The George Washington University's School of Business. He has a doctorate in accounting and finance from The George Washington University, an MBA from Stanford University, and a BA from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. McMillan is a member of the CFA Society of Washington, D.C., and the East African Society of Investment Professionals.

JERALD E. PINTO, CFA, is Director of Curriculum Projects in the Education Division of CFA Institute. Before coming to CFA Institute in 2002, he consulted to corporations, foundations, and partnerships in investment planning, portfolio analysis, and quantitative analysis. He has also worked in the investment and banking industries in New York City and taught finance at New York University's Stern School of Business. He holds an MBA from Baruch College, a PhD in finance from the Stern School, and earned his CFA charter in 1992.

WENDY L. PIRIE, CFA, is Director of Curriculum Projects in the Education Division of CFA Institute. Prior to joining CFA Institute in 2008, she taught finance, accounting, statistics, taxation, business law, and marketing for over twenty years at both large and small, public and private universities, religious colleges, and military academies. Her work has been published in the Journal of Financial Research and Journal of Economics and Finance. She holds a PhD from Queen's University at Kingston and MBAs from the Universities of Toronto and Calgary.

GERHARD VAN de VENTER, CFA, is Deputy Head of the School of Finance and Economics at University of Technology, Sydney. He was previously Director of Curriculum Projects in the Education Division of CFA Institute. He began his career in South Africa as a financial analyst and later as a dealer on the Bond Exchange, where he traded fixed income securities. He holds a PhD in finance from the University of Technology, Sydney. He is a member of CFA Institute and the New York Society of Security Analysts.

About the Author
Drew Casper is the Alma and Alfred Hitchcock Professor of American Film at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. He is a DVD commentator on innumerable American films of the classical and postwar periods.

This book is a must for anyone interested in American film during a unique period in US History. It is a beautifully researched, well-organized and dynamically conceived volume that can only enhance our total understanding of the films and the world in which they were created.

Postwar Hollywood Survey

A vast and interesting survey of the ways in which the landscape of Post WWII American Cinema had altered. This book was a required text for a film class I took on films of the 1960's and 70's, which actually made for an interesting comparison how film had transformed even past the Postwar period. If you're interested in censorship policies, this text provides numerous "Test Cases" in which films of the Postwar period actually helped loosen censorship rules.

This is a very thorough book about the post war period concerning Hollywood. The reason for the low review is that in-spite of it's depth, it is extremely confusing and overly complex requiring re-read after re-read, which makes it not worth buying unless you need it for a class.

Great Book

This is a very good book. The authors focus very well on the audience they are trying to commuinicate with and they have plenty of well thought out examples. The book is easy to read and has a nice selection of topics. This would make a good textbook or a nice reference. The book does lack much of the mathematical development, but that really isn't the driving force for the text. If you are interested in just the how to's and not really the why then this is a great book for you.
