About the Author

Henry M. Sayre is Distinguished Professor of Art History at Oregon State University-Cascades Campus in Bend, Oregon. He earned his Ph.D. in American Literature from the University of Washington. He is producer and creator of the 10-part television series, A World of Art: Works in Progress, aired on PBS in the fall of 1997; and author of seven books, including A World of Art, The Visual Text of William Carlos Williams, The Object of Performance: The American Avante-Garde since 1970; and an art history book for children, Cave Paintings to Picasso.

All good things, vol. 2...

This textbook by Sayre, volume two of a set, is a beautiful production. I teach the occasional course at my local community college entitled Introduction to the Humanities, and this is the book for the course. Volume 1 covers the period from prehistoric cave paintings, architecture and culture up to the Tudor period in Europe. It covers the major cultural shifts from Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Europe through medieval and Renaissance times. It also touches on culture in China, India, Africa and the Americas during the same time period, albeit to a lesser extent. Volume 2 picks up from the Renaissance and Tudor periods and goes forward in the Western tradition, and parallels this time in cultures outside of the Euro-centric focus.

As with volume one, every page is practically a work of art. The production values in the printing ensure that the details of the art presented are accurately and vividly portrayed. As Sayre describes in his introduction, a study in the humanities is a voyage of discovery, and any diminishment of the art shown here due to shoddy production would do a great disservice to the readers. Fortunately, there is no such issue here. While it is a textbook, this is a book which I read for pleasure over and over. The paintings, manuscripts, sculptures, tapestries, drawings, and photographs of architectural wonders are all magnificent, and one goes from visual treasure to treasure while being guided expertly through the historical and cultural contours of civilization. Connections are everything here - a key component to the design and concept is `continuity and change'. All things work together to show how things stay the same, and how things change. Literary sources are brought in to further illustrate the cross-connections within cultures.

Reactions from students have reaffirmed my choice in this text - many comment on the great graphics, the interesting selection of stories, poems and lyrics, and the elements of history and society brought out in ways atypical to a history course. Bringing together religious and secular life, professional and folk arts, political and populist developments, this book helps present an often overlooked depth to our own culture, and is a treasure of insights in new ways to history. I unfortunately do not teach the second semester of the course that uses this particular volume, but I find it tremendously worthwhile in trying to connect the ancient and medieval to the modern, the period with which my students are far more familiar.

The book was advertised as gently used and the price it was listed for I expected some worn edges and pages turned up. I got none of that the book looks brand new, no writing, no worn edges, the cover is perfect, the pages are perfect.

Should not be called "The Humanities", but rather Western European Art History

I recently had to read this entire book for my Humanities course, and maybe it's just me and my definition of humanities, but I felt this book was less about multiple cultures and more about art history, specifically that of Western European and to some extent American. I think maybe one chapter was completely dedicated to the influence from Asia. Quite honestly I'm tired of learning things from a Western European point of view. Yes I am an Italian American, and even I am fed up with how much this perspective dominates our classrooms. To me Humanities is about multiple cultures and history from around the ENTIRE globe. The title of the book and the class shouldn't be so all encompassing if it's really going to leave out so much. I also didn't care to learn about history primarily through the perspective of art. Yes I appreciate art, but if I wanted to go into this kind of depth I would have taken an actual art history class. Maybe this sounds uncultured, but so be it. If you have to read this for your class, be prepared to memorize a bunch of crap about the history of painting and architecture (and a little bit of literature, but not much), because you will get only enough history to barely explain it's influence on the art, not a complete perspective to the happenings around the world.

Just Read It!

Whether your goal is weight loss or to thoroughly enjoy the food you eat, this book is a must read. The author writes in a clear and gentle voice that guides the reader through a simple and effective approach to eating. She supports her approach with plenty of research and her years of experience and training in the field of mindfulness based strategies for health and well-being. I read the book in a day and have found myself eating less and enjoying it more. Don't pass up this delicious gem of a book that shines above others in its class.

About the Author
Jason Arnopp is a British author and scriptwriter. His background is in journalism: he has worked on magazines such as Heat, Q, The Word, Kerrang!, SFX and Doctor Who Magazine. He has written comedy for BBC Radio 4 and official tie-in fiction for Doctor Who and Friday the 13th, but The Last Days of Jack Sparks is the first novel which is entirely Jason's own fault (though some may prefer to lay the blame on Jack...).

Outstanding, original read!

After reading the PDF preview of this book online I was quite intrigued by the whole premise. I'm not a big horror fan... in fact not at all. Nevertheless that preview really intrigued me- the author's excellent, fluid and compelling style as much as the concept. I continue to marvel at Arnopp's excellent writing style - for a relatively new author, this is a major success. Actually, I think it might be a major success for even a well-established author. He's achieved a remarkable degree of suspension of disbelief, combined with both a great story line AND a very amusing (yet trenchant) critique of our culture's current obsession with social media. Wow.. what will he do next? I can't wait. 5 stars.

Clever, unsettling, modern thriller

When I first clapped eyes on the jacket for this book, it immediately hit all my booky senses. I turbo read my previous book as fast as I could, so I could get straight into this one, and get to know crazy Jack a little better.

Jack Sparks is a controversial journo and broadcaster who revels in excess, ego and rubbing people up the wrong way. He is polarising and most of the time a total dick. However, he is intelligent, witty and interesting, so you want to know what happens to him and how this thrilling tale came to be.

Whilst researching his new book ‘Jack Sparks on the Supernatural‘, Jack witnesses an exorcism in rural Italy, and let’s just say, it goes completely tits up for him from there. The plot is layered, creepy, dark, funny, cold hearted and suspenseful, as you read pages from both Jack Sparks last notes and the interviews and accounts from his brother Alistair and those who were with him in the days leading up to his death.

Yes, the cover and title gives away the key plot, but please don’t think for one second the tale of Jack lacks suspense! I’m a sucker for a good thriller and if I love it, it doesn’t leave my side. I started this book Friday evening and finished up on Saturday, I couldn’t resist finding out what happens. I also loved the accompanying website www.jacksparks.co.uk. and the social media tie in. The marketing of this book and the spin on the supernatural makes for a modern, smart, thriller.

Ghosts Don't Exist Mate!

Boy is Jack Sparks a dick. One that you'd probably have one hell of a binge with, but a dick nonetheless. Jack loves his ego, his fame, and his drugs and this book was like a car wreck you couldn't look away from.

Jack is an atheist but is planning a new book based on the supernatural. He sets off to Italy to witness an exorcism for his first bit of research. He laughs during this exorcism and the devil just doesn't like being mocked! It's a slow free fall from that point on.

I loved the use of social media, the second voice of Jack's brother sprinkled throughout, the fantastic use of an unreliable narrator, and a twist I didn't see coming. The book is refreshing and that says a lot coming form the horror genre. Reading until way past my bedtime last night to finish, I then had to go down to the basement to retrieve laundry. I stood at the top of those basement stairs chanting "You can do this. Don't be silly." in my head... and then this 41 year old woman ran as fast as she could down the stairs and back up.

This is an elegant and well-written classic. Scheffe's proofs are clear and straightforward, without being too terse. His use of orthogonal bases for vector spaces makes proofs of independence and derivations of distributions easy to understand. _The Analysis of Variance_ has definitely stood the test of time.

So the books has two different flavours: the text delivers a very intuitive presentation of the models and the formulae provide a very rigorous presentation of the claimed results. Everything is there: fixed effects, random effects, analysis of covariance, nested design, mixed design, you name it. Unlike other books I find it really easy to identify the geeky maths that I can avoid to gain a superficial understanding of the models, going back to the maths later.

The book does not address the problems of model selection or validation, but this has been discussed elsewhere many times.

We have just used it to define a model for a paper in 2013 and could find model assumptions and properties in a few minutes. Thank you, Scheffé!

The book overall was good. Interesting storyline, good characters etc. But there were enough errors (spelling, grammar) to make it distracting and to take away from the book as a whole. I'm undecided about reading the rest, will depend on the price as I am not prepared to spend a lot on a book with significant errors. If you can handle the issues then it's worth a read.

Hot passionate romance!

This is the story of two passionate lovers, destined to meet. Johnthen Trent and Jana Kidd are two different poles, obviously meant to attract each other. Jana is a waitress in a posh restaurant, but her dreams are to become an actress some day. She is an outgoing, self assured, beautiful young lady. John is a musician, director, a very rich and respected man in the society. He being the most handsome man, all women try to get to him, but he is known for his privacy.

When John meets Jana, all sparks fly between the two. Though they want to get hold of each other very badly, Jana refuses to date John. She doesn't want men to be in control of her life and is scared that she ll get carried away by John's appearance. John is not the one to be waved off so easily, he pursues her so sweetly, that she does get swept off her feet and gives herself completely to him.

This book stands out from other romances for several reasons. One is the realistic character development. The protagonists in the story have areas of their lives where they are quite confident, and others where they are not so secure. Jana, still recovering from an emotionally abusive relationship, is naturally distrustful of playboy John. And John has good reason to tread softly as he has his own emotional scar tissue. Each has secrets that they are not yet ready to share.

The love scenes are written very tastefully. The few romance books that I did read, just turned me off due to the trashiness. But here the author knows exactly how to write those scenes, the absolute passion that was flowing through in this book, is steamy and hot! This book is not one to be missed by the romance lovers!

Wow! Loving this one

I downloaded the first part this weekend and read in a few hours, then it was straight on to part 2. Cant wait for part 3!

This is great story from a lady who really knows how to write. It has the full compliment of compelling/believable story, wonderful characters, cliffhangers and drama and some sizzling hot sex scenes especially in the second part. The sexual tension is there pretty much all through the story.

I loved both Jana and JT. She is flawed and edgy, feeling guilty but desperate to succeed. He is the hot wealthy guy, but mysterious and also flawed, but we're not sure why.

This really is on the level of Sylvia Day's best stories, but with a different twist.

Part one says 66 pages, but it felt longer, and the second part was longer. I don't really go for these installments, but these are quite long and only 99c each.

About the Author

Jan G. M. van Mier received his engineering and Ph.D. degrees from Eindhoven University of Technology. After a postdoctorate year at the University of Colorado in Boulder, he moved to Delft University of Technology. As an associate professor at the Stevin Laboratory, in close cooperation with several Ph.D. students, he developed the Delft lattice model and conducted numerous experiments elucidating the fracture of concrete under a variety of conditions. In 1999, he was appointed "Antonie van Leeuwenhoek" professor at TU Delft, based on excellence in research, and developed and built the new microlab to immerse in fracture studies at smaller size/scales than before. In 2002, he moved to ETH Zurich as full professor and director of the Institute for Building Materials. In 2010, he became president of the International Association for Fracture Mechanics of Concrete and Concrete Structures (IA-FraMCoS).
